There are numerous herbs in history that have been known for their medicinal value, others herbs that are renowned has been due to their religious or spiritual values. Boswellia serrata or commonly known as shallaki is one of the rare herb that "falls" in both of these categories.
Boswellia, also commonly known as Frankincense, is a large shrub that precisely likes the hot, dry conditions of the Near Eastern lands and Indian subcontinent. It is fore mostly linked with ancient Persiaian region (Iran), but it is found in many other places in the world.
Shallaki or Boswellia’s religious importance is best seen by its use as one of the gifts of the Magi to the Christ child. It is also the incense or fragrance used in the Roman Catholic Mass and other religious ceremonies as a way to call people to worship, to focus their attention on the spiritual affairs. Its major medical use has been as a medicine to "warm the joints", to relieve rigid ness and to, in general, reduce inflammation of the joint.
Benefits of Boswellia
Due to presence of ushan virya or the hot potency in shallaki or boswellia, it helps in suppressing vata hence helping in relieving from pain and inflammation.
It suppresses all kind of edema that occurs in the body.
Shallaki or Boswellia is recommended in arthritic problems like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) i.e. amavata, osteoarthritis (OA) i.e. sandhigata vata, gout i.e. vatarakta, and joint pains, skeletal muscle pain.
Boswellia or shallaki is also indicated in lymphadenopathy and lower back pain (LBP)
Boswellic acid present in shallaki or boswellia helps in reducing any tumors
Boswellia or shallaki is also very helpful in treating the asthmatic condition.
It is very frequently used as wound healer herb and used on any kind of injury to make it heal faster in efficiently
Benefits in Arthritis and Cohn’s Disease
Researchers have found that Boswellia or shallaki helps in averting the worsening of cartilage and joint tissue. This advice that Boswellia or shallaki may ease symptoms in arthritis by holding back the collapse of connective tissues that is caused by tumor necrosis factor-alpha-induced expression of matrix metalloproteinase enzymes. Researches in both humans and dogs show after as little as 2 week of Boswellia or shallaki therapy include reduced pain, rigidity, and lameness.
In patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) i.e. amavata and Cohn’s disease, Boswellia or shallaki can help reducing the immune cells that promote inflammation while rising the number of immune cells that inhibit inflammation (anti-inflammatory cells). In studies of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Cohn’s disease Boswellia or shallaki reduced gastrointestinal inflammation and tissue damage.
How does Boswellia act
Even though the benefits of Boswellia or shallaki are alike to those of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NASAID’S), Boswellia or shallaki works by blocking 5-LOX that is the very first enzyme released in the metabolic pathway leading to the synthesis of the immune system cytokines known as leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are harmful inflammatory substances thought to unswervingly sway the disease process in a number of varied disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), cancer and asthma.
The active ingredients of Boswellia or shallaki, the boswellic acids, decrease the action of another pro-inflammatory enzyme known as human leukocyte elastase (HLE). HLE or human leukocyte elastase and leukotriene levels are raised in a lot of inflammatory diseases and allergic reactions. To date, Boswellia or shallaki is the only substance known to decrease levels of both HLE or human leukocyte elastase and leukotrienes. In the year 2005, researchers found that Boswellia or shallaki works in part by changeable the expression of the cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), another integral component in inflammation. An excess of TNF-α promotes chronic inflammation. Applying Boswellia or shallaki to cells has been shown to reduce the TNF-α-induced expression of cell adhesion and matrix metalloproteinase proteins, which are biochemical connected to endothelial dysfunction, cancer metastasis (spreading), arthritis, and other disease procedure.
Efficacy and tolerability of Boswellia extract in treatment of osteoarthritis of knee.
By Kimmatkar N, Thawani V, Hingorani L, Khiyani R.
Research was done at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur, India. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread, chronic, progressive, skeletal, degenerative disorder that frequently affects the knee joint. Boswellia serrata or shallaki is a tree that is very normally found in Indian subcontinent. The therapeutic value of its gum (salai-guggal) has been known since ages and has been used by Ayurvedic doctors from prehistoric times. It possesses excellent anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and analgesic properties. A randomized double blind placebo controlled crossover study was being conducted to review the efficacy, safety and acceptability of Boswellia serrata or shallaki Extract (BSE) in about 30 patients of osteoarthritis (OA) of knee, 15 receiving active drug or placebo for 60 days. After the first involvement, washout was given and then the groups were crossed over to receive the opposite intervention for 60 months. All patients getting drug treatment reported decrease in knee pain, increased knee flexion and increased walking distance. The occurrence of swelling in the knee joint was decreased. Radio-logically there was no change. The experimental differences between drug treated and placebo being statistically remarkable, are clinically relevant. BSE was well tolerated by the subjects apart from minor gastrointestinal ADRs. BSE is suggested in the patients of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee with likely therapeutic use in other arthritic conditions.

Question – Sir, I am suffering from severe pain in my ankle joint and related muscles even without any activity or pressure on it. Eventually it fades away by doing rests and muscle stretching. I also sometimes experience headache and feverish again without any reason. I also feel lots of heat in my joints. Is this the symptom of rheumatism?
Please suggest me that this feeling of heat in the body is due to some hormonal changes or other reason. What do you suggest for its cure? How should I heal my VATA dosha as well as PITTA dosha. Please reply. I am Rita from United Kingdom.
Hello Rita, I am getting your condition. Well I feel there is some involvement of hormones in this. I need to know more about your menstrual history. Coming to the other problem of heating and joint pains, I would recommend you to start with Shallaki capsules right away so as to minimize the effect of Vatta dosha in your body.
