What is Leukonychia?
Leukonychia is not any Chinese dish but it is a kind of nail disease. Here Leuko means white and Onyx means nails. These are Greek words. In short the nail disease in which the discoloration of the nails occur is called as Leukonychia. The reason behind getting this condition is heredity. In this disease the natural color of the nail changes. The nail color becomes white.
What are the causes of Leukonychia?
The most common cause of Leukonychia is the injury to the base part of the nail. The base part of the nail is the part from where the nail starts. In medical terms it is called as the matrix region. In the early stage of this nail disorder a white spot appears on the matrix region. This disorder is also caused due to arsenic poisoning, renal failure, heart disease, bad health vitamin deficiency and pneumonia.
What are the symptoms of Leukonychia?
Appearance of white spots on the nails is the first sign of this condition. You can get this nail disorder even if your fingernail gets hurt due to some hitting of slamming of your finger in something.
Who are at risk of getting Leukonychia?
- Those people, who use nail hardeners, nail enamels or those who put artificial nails are under major risk of getting white spots on their nails. This happens due to the allergic reaction of your nails to such products. Nails are very fragile and all these products contain certain chemicals that can easily damage your fragile fingernails.
- The white spot nail disorder can be easily get spread from some infected person to healthy person and mostly in those who are regular to gyms and beauty saloons. This nail disorder can be yeast, fungal or bacterial infection and it can attack the nails of healthy person also.
What is the treatment for Leukonychia?
Leukonychia can be easily cured if you give timely medical attention to it. The doctors will try to figure out the real culprit behind these white spots. If it is due to fungal or bacterial infection then with topical and oral therapies doctor will cure you within few weeks. In many patients these white spots gets cured on their own, as the nails will grow and then this white spot will get removed while trimming the nails. But this will take more than six months to happen. Hence better take precaution that you don’t hurt your fingers.
You can hide the white spots temporarily by applying nail polish. When you have to go for any party of occasion then you can wear any dark colored nail polish that can hide the white spot. But make sure that you keep your affected nail as much away from all such chemical containing products as possible. If the nails polish causes any further allergy then the condition can go beyond repair. Increase vegetables, nuts and grains in your diet, as it will remove zinc deficiency in case that is the reason behind getting white spots.
