Nail patella syndrome, which is also known, as NPS is a genetic disorder that causes various abnormalities in bones, joints, kidneys and fingernails. Nail patella syndrome is commonly described by the absence of kneecaps and thumbnails. In some cases underdeveloped kneecaps and thumbnails can also describe the NPS condition. This condition occurs in about one child in every fifty thousand newborns. Many researches have been done on this condition and these researches have found out some link between glaucoma and NPS.
The patients who were suffering form glaucoma were also found to be having no thumbnails. Hence glaucoma and nail patella syndrome go hand in hand. If someone has NPS in your family then you are also under major risk of getting this condition. Some people who have this condition remain unaware about it for many years before getting diagnosed with this condition. Hence in case you have NPS condition then get examined for glaucoma also.

Depending upon the nature and the severity of your condition the doctor will decide the treatment for you. There is no way with which you can cure it but it can be bought under control with regular medications. The damage can be bought under control with the help of eye drops, laser treatments, pills and other surgical operations. Your doctor will ask you to come for routine checkups. This is very important so that you can prevent your vision from getting damaged.
Nail patella syndrome can get transferred into your body is your parents have this condition. In fact there are about 50% chances are there of you getting this condition from your parents. But even if you have no history of NPS in your family then also you get this condition. In most of the patients there will be no symptoms that will indicate the nail patella syndrome. This condition is still under initial research stage. The patients might show some signs like poorly developed or absence of fingernails.
The nail patella syndrome condition mainly affects the fingernails of the thumbs and the index finger. But it can affect one or many fingers also. If at the base of the fingernail near to the cuticle you have a triangular shaped spot then also it is a clear indication of nail patella syndrome. Kneecap abnormalities are also very common symptom of NPS. The knee, bones, ligaments and the tendons might be malformed due the NPS. About 30% of the people with nail patella syndrome may have kidney diseases. Hence delaying the treatment for NPS can be life threatening also.
