Yellow nail syndrome that is YNS is a very rare condition and hence many people don’t know about it unless they themselves or any from their family and friends get this syndrome. As the name suggests it makes nails turn yellow, causes swelling of the lower extremities, recurrent pneumonia and bronchiectasis. In patients having disease of the lower lobes of the lungs this condition is visible. Some kind of lung infection is responsible for causing YNS. Due to the damage it causes to the muscular and supporting tissues it makes one or many bronchi swell and this is known as bronchiectasis.
Symptoms of Yellow Nail Syndrome -
Many people suffering form this condition don’t know about they having this condition and it is very difficult to get diagnosed. It can be caused to genetic reasons or due to congenital reasons. This condition affects the nails and also the lymphatic tissues. Many times the YNS condition is linked to lung diseases but there could be several other causes like congenital abnormalities in the lymphatic system. The symptoms of yellow nail syndrome are yellow nails; lack of cuticle, and slow growth rate of nails, loose nails and detached nails. Along with these symptoms other symptoms of YNS are pleural effusion, bronchiectasis, lymphoedema and onycholysis of one or more nails.
Diagnosis of Yellow Nail Syndrome -
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections are common in those suffering from yellow nail syndrome. This is a common condition in toenails than in fingernails. The diagnosis is quite difficult and many people come to know about this condition when they suffer from certain lung problems.
Treatment for Yellow Nail Syndrome -
There is no effective cure for yellow nail syndrome and doctors will prescribe some cough suppressants or sleeping pills to give some relief. The patients will be asked to quit smoking and avoid taking any other substance that can result in respiratory irritations. The patient can get some relief with the help of physical therapy like vibration, clapping or postural drainage. In oral medicines antibiotics, vitamin A and E, zinc sulfate, nutritional supplements and itraconazole will be given to the patient. In many cases YNS gets healed on its own without any treatment. If you will maintain proper foot hygiene then you can get protection from YNS. The shoes that you will select should not be too tight or they will damage your toenails. You should also walk barefoot whenever possible.
Your shoes should have enough space so that it doesn’t touch your thumb. Make sure that you buy quality shoe wear from good shop. You can also use various creams and liquids on your feet and toenails to keep them well moisturized. You should always wear clean socks. There are certain home remedies also that will give you cure from any of the toenail conditions. You should consult your doctor in case you find something is abnormal about your nails. Don’t try to hide your toenail problems by applying nail polish on it. Instead consult your doctor before the condition becomes threatening.
