Ingrown Toenails

Many people in this world suffer from ingrown toenails and thinking that it is too minor thing to go to doctor for, bear the pain for many months. But remember, as much you will delay the treatment for ingrown nails that much difficult the road for cure will be. In people with diabetes and other blood circulation related problems, a simple ingrown toenail can lead to toe amputation. Hence the best way to deal with ingrown toenail is to take the treatment when the infection is in the beginning stage.

Ingrown toenails is very common conditions so much so that almost all people have it in some time in their life. The first outbreak of this condition is in adolescence and after that it can occur at any age. In this condition the toenails curves in to the skin and causes redness, swelling, irritation and lot of pain. Kids also can have this condition and they will not even tell you about it unless you see red, swollen and pus filled toe. But it is better to monitor your kid's legs everyday to be sure that they are not having any condition that can hurt them.

Causes of Ingrown Toenails -

Ingrown toenails can be caused due to hereditary reasons. That means if any of your parents has this condition then you will also have it some time in your life. Other causes of ingrown toenails are wrong choice of shoes, long grown toenails, toenail fungus and trauma. If your shoes are too tight and too narrow then they also can be the cause of ingrown toenails. There are some things that you can do to ensure that the infection gets cured.

  • Trim your toenail, as this will make the skin near the toenail feel better. Next time onwards make sure that you don’t allow your toenail to grow beyond a certain limit.
  • Wear shoes that have more room inside for the toe. For this select your shoes after spending quality time in the purchase of shoes.
  • With the help of the antibacterial soap clean the infected area of the skin. Apply antiseptic lotion once in a day on the infected toenail.
  • Take hot water and add some Epsom salt to it. Soak your toe in this solution for about 15 minutes. Massage your skin gently without hurting the infected skin.

Do the above things and see if you are getting cure form the ingrown toenail. If you are not feeling relief from the pain and the skin still appear red and swollen, then call your podiatrist. Under no circumstance you should wait after three days of the outbreak of the infection. If you will delay in taking the treatment only the surgical treatment will be the last option that the doctors will have. In chronic cases of ingrown toenails, the doctor will have to remove the nail root. Antibiotics will be given to you post the surgical removal of the nail root. But don’t worry, as you will be back in action after taking rest for few hours.
