Other causes of ingrown toenails are wrong choice of shoes, long grown toenails, toenail fungus and trauma. If your shoes are too tight and too narrow then they also can be the cause of ingrown toenails. There are some things that you can do to ensure that the infection gets cured.
- Trim your toenail, as this will make the skin near the toenail feel better. Next time onwards make sure that you don’t allow your toenail to grow beyond a certain limit.
- Wear shoes that have more room inside for the toe. For this select your shoes after spending quality time in the purchase of shoes.
- With the help of the antibacterial soap clean the infected area of the skin. Apply antiseptic lotion once in a day on the infected toenail.
- Take hot water and add some Epsom salt to it. Soak your toe in this solution for about 15 minutes. Massage your skin gently without hurting the infected skin.
Do the above things and see if you are getting cure form the ingrown toenail. If you are not feeling relief from the pain and the skin still appear red and swollen, then call your podiatrist. Under no circumstance you should wait after three days of the outbreak of the infection. If you will delay in taking the treatment only the surgical treatment will be the last option that the doctors will have. In chronic cases of ingrown toenails, the doctor will have to remove the nail root. Antibiotics will be given to you post the surgical removal of the nail root. But don’t worry, as you will be back in action after taking rest for few hours.
