Sleep is very essential for us to give some rest to our body parts and get re-energized for the next day's activities. But for many people sleeping is not such a peaceful experience. Many people either have poor or too little sleep. Such people are suffering from a condition called insomnia. In patients suffering from insomnia have various sleep related problems that are caused due to various reasons like –
- Falling asleep is a very troublesome process. After reading several books also there is no sign of sleep in eyes.
- Less sleeping time due to the habit of getting up early in the morning.
- Disturbing sleep with getting up with even the noise of the needle falling on the ground.
- Even after sleeping for 7 to 8 hours, feeling tired and lethargic.
Patients suffering form insomnia may feel sleepy during the day time, feel tired throughout the day, find it difficult to focus on work, feel stressed out and can have bad mood. The amount a person should sleep is different for different people. That is why some feel fresh even after sleeping for five hours and some feel tired even after taking 9 hours of sleep. But for a good rest for the body, everyone should sleep for about 7 to 8 hours.
There are three main types of insomnia. Transient insomnia is also called as short-term insomnia, which can last from single night to few weeks. Intermittent insomnia is a type of recurring insomnia and can happen time to time. Chronic insomnia has patterns like three nights in a month or so. There are two subtypes in chronic insomnia - Primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. Out of which the primary one is safe, as it is not related to other health conditions. But the secondary insomnia can be sign of cancer, asthma, arthritis, stress and other mental health problems.
Women are under more risk of getting insomnia as compared to men. Women suffer as they are more emotional compared to men and there are several issues that can give women several sleepless nights. With growing age most people suffer from insomnia. Women in their pre-menopausal phase can also suffer from sleep related issues. Hence if you have any of the above-mentioned signs then talk with your doctor. Maintain a sleep diary for about one or two weeks before consulting the doctor, as it will help the doctor to know your condition better.
If you get diagnosed with insomnia then the doctor will give you treatment based on the type of your insomnia. The treatment for chronic insomnia will include finding any medical condition that you may be suffering from and treating the mental condition first. The doctor will study your lifestyle and tell you to avoid if you have any bad habits like drinking alcohol before going to bed. The doctors will also prescribe you sleeping pills if you need sleep badly. There are various side effects and risks involved with sleeping pills; hence you should not take them on your own.
