What is Yellow Nail Syndrome?

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is caused due to the congenital abnormalities of the lymphatic system. It can affect the nails, lymphatic tissue and can also cause lung disease. This is very rare condition and hence many people still don’t know about it. Due to this syndrome there can be other risks also like swelling of the lower extremities, bronchiectasis, recurrent pneumonia and the yellowness of nails.

What are the causes of yellow nail syndrome?

Yellow nail syndrome causes various things like yellow discoloration of the nails, lymphedema and pleural effusions. But the causes of yellow nail syndrome are unknown. Heredity and paraeoplastic are considered as two major causes behind the outbreak of this disorder. There is no proper theory that can explain what are the causes of yellow nail syndrome. Pathological reports of the infected person indicate lymphatic hypoplasia. In many patients the cause can also be the absence of lymphatatic vessels.  Due to the defect in the lymphatic, there can be various complications like pleural effusions and peripheral lymph edema.

There are still many researches are going on that are finding the various aspects about this condition. Without knowing the real cause of any condition, it is very difficult to cure it and it is the case with people suffering form yellow nail syndrome.

What are the symptoms of yellow nail syndrome?

There can be several infections of nails, which can be difficult to cure. About 50% of people having YNS, are under major risk of getting nail disorders. Mostly the toenails are under major risk as compared with the fingernails. This syndrome can remove the end of the nail and separate it form the nail bed. Below the nail plate, there will be presence of several colors like green, yellow, black and debris-white. This will discolor the nail bed and affect the top of the nail or the skin at the base of the nail also.

Ad toenails are more in presence of warm moist and bearing environment, they are under threat due to the presence of YNS. These syndromes will cause the thickness and yellowness of the nails along with slowing its growth rate. Diabetes, swelling of hands and feet and other respiratory diseases like bronchitis are also present in people having this syndrome.

What is the treatment for yellow nail syndrome?

Doctor will prescribe you some oral antibiotics so that the infection will not spread. There will be some physical therapy also, which is called as postural drainage therapy. You will be given strict instructions to avoid smoking and taking cough suppressants or sleeping pills. Vitamin E containing supplements will be given to you, as they have been proved beneficial in the cure of YNS. You can also use vitamin E topically but the oral use of vitamin E is much more effective in the treatment process. Along with vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin C is also effective in bringing the YNS levels down.
