The field of dentistry has gone through a revolution due to the dental implants. With the help of dental implants the dentist can repair your tooth or teeth. The implants are made of titanium and are inserted into the jawbone. As the plants are made up of titanium they are very safe and there are no side effects of them. Compared to dental bridges and dentures the dental implants have a long life and provide a better support. These implants act like an artificial root in which new teeth can be placed.
Dental Implants and their types -
- Root Implants – Root implant is very popular form of dental implant. This kind of dental implant is very effective as it looks very much like your natural tooth. The process begins when the dentist will apply local anesthesia. After that the dentist will make incision in the gum and make the jawbone visible. After preparing the bone for dental implant the dentist will insert the dental implant into the jawbone. This entire procedure is very delicate and has to be done with great care. Once the implants are inserted then the dentist will stitch the gums and prescribe you some medications. In about three to eight months the jawbone will firmly get attached to the dental implant. This step is known as Osseo integration step. Once this step is over the dental implant will be fitted with the new tooth.
- Plate Form Implants – Plate form of dental implants are also popular kind of dental implants. If your jawbone is not wide and is insufficient to support the root implant then the dentist will suggest you the plate form implants. These kinds of implants are long and thin compared to the root implants and hence perfectly suitable for the thin jawbones. The insertion of the dental implants is done in the similar manner. The only difference is the plate form implants is an immediate process and hence without waiting for the Osseo integration period the dentist will fit the new tooth.
- Sub-periosteal Implants – If your jawbone has receded too much to support the new implant then the dentist will advise you for sub-periosteal implants. The other implants are inserted in the jawbone while these kinds of implants are directly inserted in gums. After giving you the local anesthesia the dentist will make a mold of the mouth and the jawbone. The implants will be constructed with the help of this impression. After exposing the jawbone the dentist will insert the dental implant. In few months the gums will grow up and thus will provide the support for the implants.
After you put the dental implants you should take good care of your dental hygiene. If you will not clean your teeth and gums properly then the bacterial infection can cause sever damage to your teeth and gums. The bacterial infection makes the gums swell and also recedes the jawbone. If you want to prevent your teeth from going through the procedure of dental implants in future, then do take good care of your teeth and gums.
