Oral cancer can affect any part of your mouth like tongue, cheeks, hard and soft palate, gums, internal lining of cheeks, cheeks, lymph nodes and floor of the tongue. Cancer of head and neck can also be described as oral cancer. Those people who have the bad habits like smoking, chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol are under major risk of getting oral cancer. There are cancers like salivary gland cancer that affects the saliva-producing gland, lymphoma cancer, which causes lymph around the tonsils and at the base of the tongue and melanoma cancer that affects the skin pigmentation cells near the mouth and the lips.
Causes of Oral Cancer -
There are several causes of oral cancer and the causes cannot be named or put in one list. The main reasons for getting oral cancer are pipe smoking, cigarettes smoking, bidis smoking, or smoking hand rolled cigarettes containing cannabis, drinking too much alcohol, chewing tobacco, gutka, pan and beetle nut, the harmful ultraviolet rays can affect the lips and the skin and also invite various types of cancer. These are some of the main reasons of oral cancer. Eating improper meals lacking in zinc, vitamin A, C, E and selenium can also be responsible for causing oral cancer.
Symptoms of Oral Cancer -
The symptoms of oral cancer are white patches on the lips or red patches on the lips, patches inside the mouth or in the surrounding area of the mouth, loose teeth, soreness in lips and tongue, bleeding from mouth, swelling in mouth or throat, ulcers on lips and mouth and the formation of lumps in lips or on tongue. These symptoms are very general and can indicate some other illness also but rather than taking risk it is better to consult your dentist or your ENT specialist. Many people don’t take these symptoms too seriously and end up getting oral cancer in a fully developed stage. If detected in the initial phase oral cancer will never prove to be fatal.
Treatment for Oral Cancer -
Once you visit your doctor, doctor will have various tests done on you so as to confirm that what you have is oral cancer. The doctor will take various X-rays, do endoscopy; CT scan and MRI scan and also do a biopsy to know the exact condition of the disease and to know the extent of infection. These tests will also reveal the exact location that has got the infection.
Radiotherapy is the most famous technique in which radiations are used to kill the cancerous cells and remove them from the infected area. With the help of surgery the radioactive pellets can be inserted through the tumor, as it will gradually destroy the infectious cells. Many times before or after the radiotherapy the doctor will have to decide for a surgery to remove the tumor completely from the affected place.
Chemotherapy is also another good option for treating oral cancer. With the help of chemotherapy the cancerous cells can be destroyed easily. With the help of anti-cancerous drugs the size of the tumor is first reduce and then the tumor is removed with the help of surgery.
