Parents are responsible for whatever their kids do and learn. Parents try to imbibe all the good manners and good habits in their kids as early as they can. Dental hygiene and oral health care is also one such topic, which parents want their kids to understand and follow throughout their life. Many parents avoid taking their kids to pediatric dentist and only when the child is in immense pain of toothache or some other dental problem then they take their kid to the dentists. But this is not right way, as the kids should know what a dentist is and what is their role in his or her life as early as possible. American Dental Association recommends taking your kid for his or her first dental visit when he or she is just 6 to 12 months of age.
But if you want then you can plan the first dental checkup for your kid at the age of two years. When you take your child only when they are in pain then they consider the dentist as any other doctor and visit the dentist only when they get toothache or other dental problems. But you know how important the regular dental checkups are for everyone. Hence try to make it a habit in your child to visit the pediatric dentist at least once every year. The professional cleaning of teeth is needed as only brushing the teeth at home will not help in removing all dirt and bacterial growth from their teeth and gums. In case you stay in such a locality where the water is not fluoridated the dentist will give your child fluoride supplements.
Fluoride supplements will help your child's teeth to grow in proper way and develop well. If you will take your child to pediatric dentist then your child will be saved from several dental problems and gum related diseases faced by many children all over the world due to ignorance of parents. The dentist will also apply fluoride to your child's teeth so as to avoid tooth decay. It will be quite a task to make your two-year-old kid ready for dental checkup. It is good to make your child familiar with the pediatric dentist and his or her staff, so that your kid will not get scared for them. Take a morning appointment with the dentist, as this is the time your child will be in his or her best mood.
Prepare your child for the visit to the pediatric dentist by telling your child the importance of the dentist in everyone's life. Make sure that you portray the dentist as a hero who fights with the germs in his or her mouth. Tell him stories that will involve the bacteria present in mouth and the dentist and make him or her ready for the final D-day. Try to stay calm yourself or else you will only look scared which will in turn make your child more sacred. No matter how much you good or bad experience you had with your own dental checkups, portray only good picture to your kid and the rest will surely be good.
