A wisdom tooth or an impacted tooth is a kind of tooth that fails to emerge properly through the gums. Wisdom tooth is really painful and it has to be extracted in order to reduce the pain. Many people know that the dentists will remove their wisdom tooth but they hardly know the actual reason behind this. After taking an X-ray of your teeth line the dentist will examine it and decide what the further course of action will be. Wisdom tooth is very common condition and in many people they don’t even cause any kind of pain. Many people have four wisdom teeth in each corner of the mouth that is two in the upper line and two in the lower line. These are the last erupt teeth known as third molar teeth.
When all your other teeth are grown nicely then the wisdom teeth starts erupting through the gums. All other teeth start appearing in the childhood but the wisdom tooth appears much later when the person is in adult age. That is the reason why these teeth are called as wisdom teeth. As there is no proper place for the normal growth of this last erupted teeth the wisdom tooth remains in the soft gum tissue. If your jaw line is small then you will surely have to face lot of pain and discomfort when the wisdom tooth will appear. Wisdom tooth are also permanent tooth and if they are not causing any discomfort then you will not even come to know when the wisdom tooth erupted and all. The age group of 18 to 24 is more prone to get wisdom tooth.
As mentioned earlier wisdom tooth will not cause any trouble in most people but some might have to face problems like partially erupted wisdom teeth, swelling and tenderness of gums, pain and discomfort, trouble to open mouth, bad breath and bitter taste in mouth. The condition pericoronitis is also associated with wisdom teeth. This condition develops when the tissues surrounding the tooth gets infected due to improperly developed tooth and the wrong position of the tooth. When the partially erupted wisdom tooth develops, the food particles can easily get accumulated in it and thus the bacterial infection can cause further trouble.
The bacterial infection is the main reason behind having bad breath; bad taste in mouth and behind the swelling and the pain. If the wisdom tooth is completely buried in the gum line or has erupted in normal position then there is no chance of pain and discomfort feelings. The common causes behind facing the problem after the eruption of wisdom tooth are many. Here is the list of some of the main causes -
- Developing of this tooth happens when all other kinds of teeth are fully developed and thus the wisdom tooth has no proper place to grow.
- Small Jaw line, which can cause overcrowding.
- Small jawbone, which will result in impacted wisdom teeth.
- Some kind of jaw tumors.
