Skin burns can be caused due to so many things like hot stoves, boiling water, fire, etc. But there is one more kind of burns are there that can be equally painful and these are known as chemical burns. The treatment method for these burns depends upon the reason that caused the burns. Hence the treatment for chemical burns is also different. It is not necessary that you will get chemical burns only if you will go in an industrial setting and come in direct contact with the chemicals. There are many things that are present in house that contain chemicals and if you will not handle them properly these chemicals can also give you burn injuries.
Only those chemicals that contain strong acids and strong bases are capable of causing chemical burns. The makeup products and beauty products that you use on a daily level are also made from some or other kinds of chemicals. These products can cause burn injuries too. Other examples of household things containing chemicals are draining cleaners, toilet cleaners, phenols, etc. If you will not use these things carefully then they can cause you chemical burns. That is the reason why all such products have clearly mentioned on their packaging about keeping the product out of the reach of children. Children can accidentally touch the products containing chemicals and get sever chemical burns.
The severity of the chemical burn will depend upon the location of the burn. If you have got these burns on any sensitive part of body like face, groin and buttocks then the burns will be severe. You will have to take quick action and assure that you or the one who ahs got such chemical burns get timely treatment. You should keep the numbers of emergency services and poison control center handy so that you can contact for help when you need help. Getting first aid is also important in reducing the severity of the burn injury. In case anyone in your family or neighborhood gets such chemical burns make sure that you know the following steps to take care of the patient unless some help comes.
- Take the person away from the accident site, as this will reduce the effect of chemicals on that person as well as you. Make sure that no one goes near the accident location.
- Observe the part of the body that has got the burn injury and remove the clothes that may be in contact with this area. This will help the effect of chemicals to stay in the limited area and will not allow it to spread anywhere else.
- Remove the chemical from the affected body art with the help of cotton balls. Wash the affected area with cool running water for about 20 minutes or till the time some help arises.
- Give some assurance to the person who has got these chemical burns and keep his or her morale up. Assure them everything is all right.
- In case of seizures, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat and dizziness make sure that you take the patient first to the nearby hospital.
