Diabetic is a very well known disease and everyone knows that the diabetic patients have high blood sugar levels. Insulin present in the body converts the sugar level in blood into energy that is required for day-to-day work. This insulin reduces the blood sugar levels but with diabetic people there is either low insulin or lack of insulin that prevents the sugar in blood from getting converted into energy. Diabetic patients are prone to getting various other diseases including diabetic retinopathy. As you can guess form the name it is a condition that affects the retina of the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy affects the normal functioning of the eyes.
Diabetic patients are advised by doctor to check their eyes regularly. People with diabetes must follow this or else they will not even come to know when they will get the condition called diabetic retinopathy. High blood sugar in the blood damages the blood vessels and damage gets more severe with time. Mainly the blood vessels in the feet and the thin vessels found near the retina of the eye get damaged due to the high blood sugar levels in the blood. With each passing day the damage will affect the retina more and more. Slowly the walls of the blood vessels will have micro aneurysms, which will causes the vessels to balloon out in some parts. Any time these aneurysms can burst and the blood vessels around the retina of the eye will also get blocked. This means there will be no blood supply to retina and new blood vessels will start growing, which will be thin and weak too.
The advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy is known as proliferative retinopathy. The weakened and new blood vessels will leak blood in this advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy and thus can cause vision loss and blindness. Hence you can guess that if the condition is neglected for long time then there could be so much damage to the eyes. Hence if you are a diabetic patient then make sure that you undergo eye check up two to three times in a month. You can prevent the diabetic retinopathy from occurring by taking basic care of your eyes.
Keep your blood sugar levels to a normal level and for this you will need to control your diet. Make sure that you don’t gorge on too sweet dishes and control your eating habits. If you have sweet tooth then make sure that you are extra careful about your blood sugar levels. Along with eating right kind of food, doing regular exercising is also like a key to ensure that the blood sugar levels will be normal. Diabetes can happen at any age and hence make sure that you take control of your life before life takes the control out of your hands. There are treatments available for diabetic retinopathy and laser surgery is one such treatment. The laser surgery will be carried out to stop the leakage from the blood vessels. This surgery will seal the blood vessels in order to prevent them from leaking. Living healthy lifestyle and regular eye checks can save you from diabetic retinopathy.
