The inflammation of the episclera is known as Episcleritis. Episclera is the connective tissue between conjunctiva and sclera. In Episcleritis the eye becomes red and that is why many people confuse this condition with conjunctivitis. There is no discharge from the eyes in Episcleritis. There is no reason behind the occurrence of this condition. But if you have arthritis, lupus and inflammatory bowel disease then your chances of getting this eye disease are also high. Some of the other causes of getting this condition are herpes simplex, tuberculosis, Rosacea and gout.
The numbers of women who get Episcleritis are more than the number of men. In short women are more prone to getting this condition. Women in their mid 30's and 40's are the main victims of Episcleritis. This condition can happen again if you have got it once. There are not many symptoms of this condition and the only symptoms are redness of the eyes and sore eyes. When your will go to your eye doctor then he or she will diagnose this condition with the help of slit lamp examination. Many times the condition will get cured on its own without any medical help. Hence there is no need of taking proper treatment.
In case you are not getting relief from this condition in two to three days and the eyes are still red and itching then it is better to consult the doctor. The doctor will give you mild steroids and anti-inflammatory medications. Episcleritis generally happen in the white part of the eyes. In this condition due to the inflammation of the eyes, the blood vessels get damaged and that is what makes your eyes look red. With the help of steroid eye drops the doctor will try to give you relief from this inflammation. Apart from inflammation, you will not experience any kind of pain in your eye and hence you can stay without taking any treatment also. Many people don’t even realize that they have got Episcleritis and think that their eye is red due to over-exertion.
A simple Episcleritis will cause you moderate to severe inflammation and it will keep on recurring every one to three months. Once appeared the inflammation and redness will remain for about one week to two weeks. In case you are suffering form any other major illness then it is not good to stay without treatment. You should go and get your eye checkup done. In spring season or in the fall season, the occurrence of Episcleritis is more common. Stress and hormonal changes are also responsible for causing this condition and hence mainly women are the victims of this condition.
Compared to simple Episcleritis, the nodular Episcleritis is more painful. There is no proper count of frequency of this condition and it can happen any number of times in a patient without having any particular cause. More than 70% cases of this condition are found in women. Episcleritis is a common condition of eyes and can happen to anyone who is above 30 years of age.
