Myopia or nearsightedness is one of the common problems of eyesight. The statistics show that almost one third of the population is suffering from myopia. As the name suggests, it is a condition in which the person cannot see distant objects clearly. People suffering from myopia can see nearby objects and things very clearly but the vision problems start when they have to see something that is far from their eyes. This condition is not that serious and can easily be cured with the help of proper eyeglasses.
Headaches, fatigue and eyestrain are the common symptoms of myopia and these symptoms will show when the affected person will try to see things or objects that are far from his or her eyesight. When seeing far away things, the person puts extra pressure on the eyes and thus gets headaches. The things that are at a distance will appear blurry and vague to a myopic patient. In the people suffering from myopia the eyeball is longer from front to the back and this why the light rays don’t focus properly on the surface of the retina. As one grows in age, this problem becomes worse but as mentioned earlier this condition can be corrected easily.
But in some cases the eyeballs are very elongated ones and thus the myopia is considered as severe. This condition is known as pathologic myopia or degenerative myopia. This kind of myopia will surface at the age of twelve and become worse as the person will grow in age. There are various treatments by which myopia can be cured. Among all other ways of correcting myopia, using eyeglasses and lenses is the most popular way of treating myopia. The patients will get a negative number and hence there is no need of worries about wearing specs or lenses.
But in case you are not comfortable with the idea of wearing glasses or contact lenses, then you can also consider the option of refractive surgery. Refractive surgery is very effective in reducing or eliminating the need of eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK is also one of the famous and popular kind of laser based refractive surgery. In LASIK treatment the surgeon will cut a flap from the top part of the cornea and with the help of laser remove some corneal tissues. Once the process is done, then again the surgeon will put back the flap at its original place.
PRK is another kind of surgery used all over the world for treating myopia. In this treatment, with the help of laser, a layer of corneal tissue is removed. By doing this, main aim is to make the cornea flat and this will help in focusing the light rays properly on the retina of the eyes. To treat minor myopia conditions, plastic corneal rings can also be implanted, so as to correct the shape of cornea. If you are afraid to undergo surgery then there are several non-surgical processes like orthokeratology, in which you will be given special type of contact lenses. These contact lenses have the power to re-shape the cornea within some period of time.
