When a person finds it difficult to get adapted to dim lighting conditions then this condition is called as nyctalopia. In simple terms it is known as night blindness. In people who are suffering from this condition, the pupil dilates when it is dark and hence they become nearsighted at night. This condition is known as spherical aberration. This affects the person's vision in the nighttime due to the low lighting conditions. People suffering from night blindness can see clearly during daytime but have problems of poor vision during the nighttime.
If you suffer from nearsightedness and have not taken proper treatment to cure this condition then it can result in night blindness over the course of time. If you are suffering from myopia along with having night blindness then your condition will be worse, as the pupil dilates more at night. If you are taking treatment for glaucoma then the medications of glaucoma can also be responsible for causing night blindness. Retinitis pigmentosa is a retinal degenerative disorder, which also can be the cause behind your night blindness. There are few types of night blindness, which are explained below.
Types of Night Blindness -
- Congenital stationary night blindness – This kind of night blindness is present from the birth and genetics are responsible for causing this condition.
- Progressive night blindness – This kind of night blindness is due old age and with growing age, this condition gets worse.
Causes of Night Blindness –
Vitamin A deficiency, effects of some medications and some other major illness are some of the causes of night blindness. Those who have undergone some kind of obesity related surgeries are also prone to getting this condition. This is so because these people have deficiency of vitamin A. Nearsightedness, glaucoma medications, vitamin A deficiency, cataracts, Retinitis pigmentosa, bile duct obstacle, birth defects, muscular degeneration, diabetes and cystic fibrosis are some of the main causes of night blindness.
Symptoms of Night Blindness -
When driving in the evening or nighttime the people suffering from night blindness will have poor vision due to the dim lights. This can result in accidents or other mishaps; as such people take longer time to adjust to seeing in the dark. Along with this other symptoms are dry eyes and blurred vision.
Treatment for Night Blindness -
The doctors will first try to figure out the cause behind the night blindness, as depending upon the cause the treatment will vary. Many patients will get relief from this condition with the help of eyeglasses. In the patients of glaucoma, if night blindness occurs, then the doctor will change the medications for glaucoma to cure the night blindness. In those who are having this condition due to nearsightedness, the doctor will give glasses that the patient will need to wear in the nighttime. If the cause for this condition turns out to be the vitamin A deficiency then the doctor will give you supplements of vitamin A. The doctors will advice the patients to include such food groups that will have enough of vitamin A in it.
