The inflammation and the demyelination of the optic nerve that serves the retina of the eye are called as optic neuritis (ON). The common symptoms of this condition are blurred vision, loss of visual acuity, partial or complete blindness, and pain in the back region of the eyes and partial loss or complete loss of color vision. At the onset of multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis is a common condition. Almost 70% people who have multiple sclerosis will suffer from optic neuritis. Almost all the patients of optic neuritis have got this condition due to demyelination.
The age group that is more affected with optic neuritis is between 15 to 50 years of age. In this age group, more than half the people with optic neuritis will have multiple sclerosis in as short as 15 years from the onset of this condition. Here are the common symptoms of optic neuritis.
- Blurred vision – About 58% people suffering from ON will have blurred vision. The blurring of the vision can be mild or can be severe. About 54% people suffering from ON have the risk of becoming blind. Blurred vision is also a symptom for many eye related diseases and conditions. Hence many people mistake their symptom to be some other condition and start wearing some eyeglasses without even consulting their eye doctor. This is very wrong, as this will give lot of time for the ON to set up properly. Thus the further treatment will become troublesome.
- Eye Pains – This is also one of the most common symptoms of ON. The person suffering from this condition may also have mild to severe headaches in the region that is close to the eyes. Eye aches is also very common symptoms of this condition.
- Reduced color vision – Almost all people suffering from ON have some or the other problem regarding their color vision. The patients will have reduced color clarity.
Treatment for optic neuritis -
VEP and VER are the visually evoked potential tests that are used to detect the speed of the nerve transmissions in the optic nerve. These tests are used to diagnose the optic neuritis. The optic neuritis is a condition that can take from few hours to few days to develop fully after the onset of first symptoms. The treatment for ON is also very simple and the recovery from ON is also very speedy. The sight problems will also get cured once the treatment is complete.
In 33% of the cases of ON the recurrence of the condition can happen. But you can again take the treatment to get your vision back and hence there is no worry. But only thing that you have to ensure from your side is that you don’t wait for the condition to become severe and take timely medical help.
