Pink Eye

The inflammation of the conjunctiva is called as conjunctivitis or pink eye. In pink eye the membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner surface that covers the eyelids gets inflamed. This infection can be caused due to bacteria, viruses, toxins, allergens and irritants. The inflammation of the conjunctiva can also be caused due to some other diseases. In pink eye the affected eye becomes red and it is a highly contagious condition. The pink eye can be caused due to infections or non-infections. The viruses that cause fever and common cold can also cause pink eye.

The bacteria that are responsible for causing sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and chlamydia can also cause pink eye. The non-infectious pink eye can happen in children and it is mostly caused by allergies and allergens like pollen, grass, dust mites and animal dander. Some soaps, chemicals like chlorine and smoke and fumes can also act like a trigger and cause pink eye. If you wear contact lenses then there are high chances of you getting giant papillary conjunctivitis. Red eyes, sore eyes and watery discharge are some of the common symptoms of pink eyes.

Being a contagious disease pink eye can spread easily from affected person to a healthy person. The non-infectious type of conjunctivitis has symptoms like heavy tearing, soreness and itchiness. The symptoms of both type of pink eye are same but the only difference is that the non-infectious pink eye is not contagious condition. The symptoms of giant papillary conjunctivitis have worst symptoms with heavy discharge from the eyes. Red bumps will also appear in this kind of pink eye. The treatment for infectious conjunctivitis will be similar to that of other contagious diseases. The infectious pink eye will be treated with the help of antibiotics and antibiotic creams and ointments.

In pink eye you will have discharge form your eyes, make sure that you use warm washcloth to wipe your eyes. In case of viral pink eye only antibiotics will not give complete relief from the eye condition and the virus should be removed completely from the immune system.  It is better to consult your doctor before taking any kind of medicines. Eye drops are also helpful in reducing the common symptoms of pink eye like soreness, redness and irritation of the eyes. Everybody has conjunctivitis one time or another in his or her life. Hence there is nothing to worry but make sure that you wear sunglasses in order prevent others from seeing your affected eye.

The pink eye condition is very common and it will get cured on its own within 7 to 10 days. But rather than waiting for on week and face the symptoms of this condition, you can get some treatment so that at least the severity of the symptoms will be brought under control. In case your child has got pink eye explain them about what it is and what precaution they should take in order to prevent the infection to happen in the other eye.
