Strabismus is commonly known as crossed eye or esotropia. In this condition both the eyes don’t look toward the same object together. One eye moves normally while the other either moves in up, down, left or right direction. This condition can further lead to Amblyopia. In short the strabismus is physical disorder while Amblyopia is its visual outcome. There are so many people out there in every corner of the world who suffer from this condition. But there is no much more knowledge about what are its symptoms, causes and treatment options among people.
Symptoms of Strabismus -
Newborn babies have crossed eyes and this is due to the poor developed vision. As the child grows he or she has developed vision and can see things normally. But there are some newborns in which even after growing up the crossed eye doesn’t seem to disappear. Hence it is must of parents to watch out their newborn babies carefully and observe their vision as the child grows. In case you feel that your child in enough big and still has the crossed eye problem then there are chances of your child having strabismus.
Let your eye care practitioner examine your child's eyesight to judge whether your child has strabismus or not. If the child gets diagnosed in early phase of this condition then the treatment will be more effective. If your child will not get timely treatment then he or she might develop double vision or blurred vision. There are also chances of your child developing some mental illness mainly so if your child has outward pointing eyes.
Causes of Strabismus -
Paralysis of the ocular muscles or due to the unequal pulling of muscles on one side of the eye, strabismus is caused. The kids below the age of two are more prone to getting this condition but the risk of this condition can remain till the age of six.
Treatment for Strabismus -
The treatment for strabismus is similar to the treatment for Amblyopia. The doctor will give vision therapy for your child that will include patching or visual exercises. The eye glasses with correct prescription o bifocal or prism correction are also good for giving proper focus for your child's eyes. Along with these general methods there is also one option of surgery, which will be useful in correcting the misalignment of the eyes.
The correct age for undergoing surgery for correcting the strabismus condition is different according to different surgeons. But the correct reports suggest that it is better to undergo the surgery as early as possible so as to avoid the eyes getting further damaged. Once your child starts crawling and grasping things then it is the right time for the surgeon to perform this surgery on your child. In present times also there are lots of research is going on about strabismus and it can be said that various treatment options are being considered to correct the misalignment of the eyes. For now surgery is the best option to correct the strabismus, as it gives permanent solution.
