The infection of the sebaceous glands located at the base of the eyelashes is known as stye or hordeolum. The infection caused by a tiny oil producing glands located below each eyelash a small boil or abscess appears below the eyelashes. Once you get stye then you will have to face this condition many times, as this condition can reoccur many times. There is high chance of diabetes mellitus if you are getting stye many numbers of times. For this reason it is better to consult a general physician in case you have any doubts regarding stye. In patients suffering from Blepharitis, appearance of stye is very common.
Many people mistake the Chalazion for a stye as in Chalazion also the blocked oil gland near the eye creates similar kind of boils. Stye is not a harmful condition of eye and it can happen at any age and to anyone. The early symptoms of stye are eye pains, red eyes, tenderness and swelling in the area below the eyelashes. After this a tiny pimple appears below the eyelash and this cause double swelling either in the tiny area or in the entire eyelid. The common causes of stye are excessive flow of tears, entry of foreign body in eyes and increased sensitivity to light.
Once you notice that your eyes have got stye then you can get relief by alternating between hot and cold compresses. This condition gets cured on its own within one week of the occurrence of the pimple. If the stye has appeared on the eyelid then you will experience double pain and the condition will also take more time to heal completely. After the occurrence of tiny pimple on the eyelids the infected follicle starts filling with pus and it takes about one week for the pus to get dried out. In order to reduce to the swelling of your eyelids, you can also give light massage to the eyelids. If the pus is more then the eye doctor will cut the swollen area so that the pus will get dried out fast.
The main reason behind the occurrence of stye is the bacterial infection to the eyes. This condition is more common in infants but it can happen to people of any age. The bacteria staphylococcus aureus which causes stye lives in nose and can easily spread to eyes if the person touches his or her eyes after touching his or her nose. Blepharitis is also one of the causes of stye. Once you go to the eye doctor then the doctor will prescribe antibiotic or steroid drops or injections so as to reduce the swelling and make the pimple dry fast. But it is better to wait for one week, as this condition gets cured without the need of any medication. To get relief from the pain you can take warm compresses for 5 to 10 minutes thrice to four times in a day.
