IF the outbreak of the HSV virus occurs at the birth canal then your doctor will have to do a C-section delivery so as to protect your child from getting affected with HSV. If you have HSV virus in normal levels in your body, then there is no risk even if you have normal delivery. But your chances of getting the HSV outbreak during delivery are les, if you have had HSV outbreak before getting pregnant. Hence in this case there are no chances of you giving the infection to your baby.

But if you have got the cold sores for the first time during your pregnancy then also there is a reason to worry. You can pass this condition to your baby and it is known as Neonatal herpes. It can be risky situation for your baby. In case you get the outbreak for the first time during your pregnancy then consult your doctor fast. Neonatal herpes is a rare condition and it is in fact very difficult to know how many such cases were registered worldwide. If any adult who has active cold sores kisses your new-born baby then there are chances of your baby contracting the neonatal herpes.
