Eczema is a skin disease. The skin can get dried and rashes may appear. The affected part gets swollen, it becomes red and itchy and there are blisters on the skin. There may be bleeding from the blisters or it may ooze a fluid. The cells that produce swelling in the skin by realizing certain chemicals that make the skin dry, itchy and red, cause eczema. Commonly found eczemas are: atopic, irritant contact and allergic contact dermatitis.

• Atopic Eczema- Atopic Eczema occurs in patients having allergies. The symptom of atopic eczema is unbearable itchiness.  The itching is so severe that it leads to scratching. This may result in getting infection. The skin may ooze in case of infected eczema.  Infected eczema is very painful and the patient feels embarrassed because of the constant itching. There can be dryness of the skin all over the body; the skin may turn red and swollen.

• Allergic Contact Dermatitis - This type of eczema occurs when a person’s skin is allergic to some metals. For example, many people are allergic to metal used in imitation ornaments, belts, zipper and buttons on clothes. Or the skin may be allergic to certain chemicals used in personal skin care products like soaps, shampoos, lotions, creams or detergents. The skin of the infant is very tender and more likely to have a reaction. Therefore, it is advised to use baby products with care.

• Irritant Contact Dermatitis - caused by household chemicals and mostly adults are affected by this eczema, which come in contact with detergents, cleaning materials with acid base etc. Chlorex is one such product, which is acidic and is widely used toilet cleaner. Change your cleaning material to a milder one. Always use disposable hand gloves while handling these materials.

Tips to prevent eczema:

• Change your diet to a low mineral content. Avoid ginger, onion and ladies finger, which are rich in minerals. Limit the use of spices and oils in your food. 

• Try to find out to what you are allergic and avoid those things as far as possible.
  Salad vegetables like cucumbers and radish can aggravate eczema. Avoid them. Fruits with high water content like oranges, watermelons and papayas should be avoided. Reduce the intake of cold items like ice creams and cold drinks. Cashew nuts are harmful for eczema.

• Use mild soaps and detergents. If the skin is inflamed, take care that the skin does not come in direct contact with such chemicals. Try to use herbal products. Do not use oil based lotions and creams.

• Use lukewarm water for bathing, instead of hot or cold water. Use a soft towel for wiping the skin dry. Use soft tissues or towel to wipe the sweat. Do not let the sweat accumulate on the skin.

• Avoid going to places of cold and dry climate. Keep the house germ free by cleaning regularly.

• Sunbath and steam bath are found to be of great help in curing eczema. It helps in eradicating the bacteria causing the disease.
