Melasma is a kind of discoloration of skin and it mostly appears on the face due to over exposure to the sun. Cheeks, chin, upper lip and forehead are the main parts of the face which get affected with Melasma. But it can also occur on other areas of skin, which get too exposed to the harsh sun rays. During pregnancy many women suffer from this skin condition and it is called as Chloasma. Due to overexposure to the sun skin starts producing melanin in excess and that is what is responsible for Melasma. But still the main reason behind the occurrence of Melasma is not known yet.
Melasma is a harmless skin condition and its occurrence in any way doesn’t mean that you are suffering any kind of organ malfunction. Here are some causes of Melasma that may be responsible for causing you this skin condition.
- Hereditary Reasons – It is a common condition in women and it can be caused due to hereditary factors. If anyone in your family had this condition then your chances are also high. It is said that more than 30% of the cases of Melasma are due to family history. This skin condition is more common in identical twins.
- Exposure to Sun – As mentioned above this is supposed to be the main cause behind Melasma. The pigments producing glands in the skin can become hyperactive due to harsh ultra violet rays or even due to strong light bulbs. Those whose skin is light color have less risk of getting this skin condition. The over sun exposure and the hormonal changes together can produce increased amounts of pigments in your skin and thus result in discoloration of the skin.
- Hormonal Imbalance – During pregnancy a women’s body goes through several hormonal changes and these things can easily lead to the skin condition called Melasma. These are also called as mask of pregnancy and more than 50% of pregnant women suffer from these marks.
- Thyroid Related Dysfunctions – Thyroid dysfunction also causes Melasma and the chances of people suffering from thyroid problem have four times more chances of getting Melasma.
Treatment for Melasma – women who are pregnant or those who are taking oral contraceptives are in catch-22 situation when it comes to removal of the Melasma. Melasma is a skin condition which makes spoils the appearance of men and women and hence many want to get rid from these skin discoloration marks. In this skin condition the affected skin parts can get grey, brown and black color patches. With the help of Wood’s lamp doctors can easily diagnose this condition.
- If you have got these marks during pregnancy then no need to worry as after you give birth to your child, these marks will get vanished within few months.
- You can remove these patches with the help of drastic skin peeling but it will take longer time to heal the skin.
- Laser treatment is also another option but it is very costly. This treatment is not good in case of dermal Melasma.
- Skin lightening products and soaps and creams are also useful in reducing these patches but don’t use products containing Hydroquinone.
