Skin abscess means the pus gets accumulated in the skin. Skin abscesses can be formed in various parts of the body and even inside the body. When the skin abscesses is of grave nature, doctor may perform a surgery to remove the pus from the body. The pus is white or yellowish green thick fluid that comprises of dead tissue, bacteria and white blood cells. Normally, a skin abscess is the result of bacterial infection. But all bacterial infections do not lead to accumulation of pus.
Some bacteria make toxins and help in the making of pus. These toxins may harm the body's tissues. When the bacteria produce toxins, our natural body immune system will destroy the bacteria. In this fight with the bacteria, few of our body tissue also die. A gap is formed as a result and pus starts to fill the gap. When the infection becomes severe, the cavity may become bigger and is filled with more pus.
If there is any wound on the body, fungi may cause skin abscesses. Abscesses are common with people having weak immune system as compared to those with a healthy immune system. Skin abscesses can occur to any person, even in a person of sound health. Skin abscesses are primarily caused by bacterial infection. Once an abscess is cured, there are no further complications. A few abscesses may get cured without any treatment. Skin grows on its own once the wound heals.
If the wound is very big, then the pus may be removed by a local surgery. An incision is made on the top of the skin to remove the pus. For those abscesses, which are inside the body, they may have to be removed only by performing a surgery. How the operation is conducted depends on which part of the body is infected with the abscess. All small abscesses can get cured on it’s own and there may not be any need to consult a doctor. However, the abscesses in the internal parts of the body should not be ignored and must be reported to a doctor for the removal.
In case of small abscesses, do not leave the wound open as it may lead to further infection. Clean the wound with an antiseptic powder. Do not try to break open an abscess as it may spread the infection to the adjoining parts. Dress the wound regularly, after cleaning the adjoining parts with antiseptic lotion. Pain and slight swelling may be experienced. Small abscess are more prominent in growing children since they play and may hurt themselves.
If one’s immune system is strong, abscesses may not appear at all. To strength the immune system, we should eat a balanced diet. Eat citrus fruits since they are a rich source of vitamin C. Fresh Amla when eaten raw is a very good source of antioxidants and can even fight cancer. Amla is known to rejuvenate the cells of the body. Fruits and vegetables, which contain Vitamin E also strengthen our immune system.
