A skin cyst is a structure similar to a closed bag. It does not belong to the normal part of the body tissue. Skin cysts are normal and can appear anywhere in the body to a person of any sex and to people of any age group. Cysts, normally contains a semi liquid, semi solid or gas like matter. Cysts could be of any size and shape. It may be so small as to be seen only under a microscope or it may large that they take the place of normal organs and tissues. The outside layer of a cyst is called the capsule.
Causes of a cyst -
- Cysts can appear due to various reasons in the body, namely;
- When the flow of fluid is stopped due to some reasons
- Infections of any kind
- Tumors
- In case the patient is suffering from chronic inflammatory condition
- If the cyst is passed on genetically
- Some congenial defect in the development of the organs when the baby is still in the embryo
A cyst can take the form of a lump. It appears just under the skin and can be seen and felt. Cyst in breast can be felt when you touch the affected area with your hands.
The examination of cysts cannot be done without expert help, when it occurs in the internal organs such as the kidneys or liver. There may not be any symptoms and cannot be detected by the patient without medical help. These cysts can be identified with the help of x-ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography or CAT Scan, and magnetic resonance imaging or MRI depending on the location of the cysts.
Cyst can occur in any part of the body, for example, in the breast, ovaries, behind the knees, in joints of the body, on the eyelid, near the mouth of the vagina, on the skin glands, in the brain or in the kidneys. Most of the cysts are not harmful, but a few may be cancerous or may be the reason of some infection. When you see a lump on your skin, then it is better to consult your doctor for accurate diagnosis.
Treatment of Skin Cysts -
The treatment for a cyst primarily depends upon the area of it’s appearance and also upon it’s size. A surgery needs to be performed for removal of very big cyst. Sometimes the cyst is filled with pus or other watery substance. This may be dried with medication or by piercing a needle or by cutting the cyst. X ray, scanning or MRI may have to be done in drying the cyst if it in the internal organ of the body.
If the doctor doubts about the cyst to be malignant, the cyst has to be removed surgically and a biopsy is taken of the cyst wall (capsule) to check if it is cancerous. In some cases, the fluid gathered from a cyst is checked with a microscope to determine if the fluid contains Cancer cells.
