Since pre historic times, people have used some or the other method of birth control. Various options are available for birth control or ways to prevent pregnancy. Newly weds or unmarried couples may not want children for sometime. They may seek a birth control method that is temporary. A few others who do not want any children at all may go in for an option that is permanent in nature. Another point of consideration is which of the partner is comfortable using the contraceptive. Which method one chooses is solely his or her own discretion but here is the list of all the possible options that are available for birth control.
Some of the popular birth control methods are mentioned below:
- Celibacy: Can this really be an option? Well, funny it may sound, but this is the only option, which can guarantee 100% protection against birth control.
- Loop/ Copper T (Implants): Well, though 100% safe, celibacy is not an option at all. Loop or copper T is a popular option, wherein the doctor inserts a "T" in the uterus, which bars the sperm from entering the uterus,. The loop needs to be changed over a period of time say three or five years depending upon the expiry date of the implant. After effect of this birth control device is heavy flow during period, weight gain, nausea.
- Condoms: This method is not only safe, but it also provides protection from against sexually transmitted diseases. Both male and female condoms are available in the market. Male condoms are widely used and often distributed by certain governments to control population. However, female condoms are not popular.
- Pills: A variety of pills are available in the market. The main function of the pills is to stop ovulation. There are many side effects of pills-weight gain, upset stomach and uneasiness to name a few. The pills need to taken everyday for it to be effective. Also, which pill suits the individual can be checked only by trial and error and it may take long time before you come to know which suits you the best.
- Sterilization: This method is one time and can be done on both male and female. If the couple does not want any more children at all, any one of them can go for this surgery. However, once done, the surgery may be irreversible.
- Natural contraceptives like withdrawal method or abstaining during the ovulation period of the female are a few natural forms of contraceptives. However, this method cannot be relied upon. The failure rate of such contraception is very high.
- There are certain other forms of birth control like taking a birth control shot or the patch. Estrogen and progestin are used in patch for birth control. The life of the patch is four weeks, after which the female has to take the patch again. The patch can be taken either on stomach, arm, buttocks or upper torso. A shot has to be taken once in every three months till the time the female does not want to conceive.
