Blepharitis is a common eye related problem, which mainly affects the older adults. In the severe case of Blepharitis patients suffer from the irritation and inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva. Many patients show no symptom that can indicate this eye condition and come to know about their eye condition when the disease has already reached the severe state. This is not a serious problem and there are treatments to cure this condition. Generally this condition affects both the eyes and mainly affects the edge of the eyelids.
Blepharitis is a painful and irritating condition of the eyes. This disease is kind of stubborn and resists the treatment and can recur in future. This condition will not harm you in any way, as there will be no damage caused to cornea or your normal vision. With the help of the slit lamp the eye doctor will first examine your eyelids and take out the pus sample. This sample of pus taken helps them to identify the bacteria that have caused the condition. Thus it helps in deciding the antibiotics that will be effective in killing the bacteria responsible for causing the Blepharitis.
The eye doctor will prescribe you some antibiotic ointment that you are supposed to apply over the affected eyelids. Some of the common causes of Blepharitis are allergy to dust and smoke, a skin condition called rosacea, bacteria like staphylococci and some other kind of infection. Dry eyes, sandy feeling, inflammation of the eyes, sore eyelids, blurred vision, burning sensations, sensitivity to light, swollen eyelids, red eyes and the pricking feeling in the eyes are some of the common symptoms of Blepharitis.
Treatment for Blepharitis -
As mentioned earlier the antibiotic ointment is really helpful in reducing the severity of the symptoms and giving relief from the inflammation and itching of the eyes. The ointment also protects the other parts of the eyes by resisting the spreading of the infection to other parts of the eyes. The one precaution that the doctor will ask you to take is not to rub your eyes. The treatment for Blepharitis mainly focuses on reducing the severity of the symptoms. You can also get relief from this eye condition by applying warm and wet compresses on your eyes. You can keep the compresses for about 15 minutes on your eyes several times throughout the day.
After touching your eyes, you should wash your hands with soap. This will prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of your body. In order to keep your eyelids and eyelashes clean from the deposits, you can dip a cotton swab in a solution that you can prepare at home. For preparing the cleaning solution take one cup of water and add few drops of baby shampoo in it. Clean your eyelids and eyelashes with this solution without rubbing your eyes. There is no need to pull the crusts off with your fingers. You can also keep a washcloth soaked in warm water for some time on your eyes so as to make your eyes moist.
