What is Endometriosis?
To understand what is endometriosis, first you will need to know what are endometrial membranes. Endometrial membranes are present in the uterus and these are the tissues that make up the uterus linings. When these endometrial membranes are found elsewhere rather than in the uterus then this condition is called as Endometriosis. The endometrial membranes can be found in female pelvis like ovary, pouch of Douglas and in the broad ligaments below the ovary. But in some serious cases of endometriosis these membranes can be found in complicated places like bladder, brain, lung and kidney.
What are the symptoms of Endometriosis?
During the menstrual cycles the endometrial membranes break down and that is why women suffer from cramps and pain in the uterus region during their menstrual cycles. Now you can easily imagine what will happen in case of those women who have endometriosis. These women will also experience pain and cramps in the region where the endometrial membranes are located. Hence you can understand what will be the symptoms of endometriosis. Immense pain or chronic pelvic pain in the places like lower back, pain while urinating and painful bowel movements. In serious cases of endometriosis patients will also experience infertility and depression caused due to fatigue.
What are the causes of Endometriosis?
The actual causes behind endometriosis are not known but there are several possible causes of this condition. The excess of estrogen in female body is the number one cause behind having this condition. This condition is most commonly seen in women who have not become pregnant yet. Hence in the treatments for endometriosis, the doctors try to bring the estrogen levels to normal and this is what gives the cure from this condition.
During menstruation, when the inner linings of the uterus shed, some of the linings get out of the body through vagina. But some of these linings will get attached to other regions like fallopian tubes and also in the region within the pelvic cavity. These endometrial tissues will then grow in these areas and thus cause endometriosis. Endometriosis is also caused when the menstrual fluids flow back in to the other body parts instead of going out of the body. Heredity is also one of the possible causes of endometriosis. Hence the female blood relatives of the lady suffering from endometriosis have the risk of getting this condition.
The hormone imbalance can get passed from one generation to the other and hence heredity being the cause of this condition seems to be justified. The hormone imbalance purely means increased levels of estrogen and it can get easily passed if your mother, sister had this condition.
What is the treatment for Endometriosis?
As mentioned earlier the treatments for endometriosis mainly focus on bringing the estrogen levels to the normal level. Once the estrogen levels come back to the normal then the person suffering form this condition will not experience any kind of pains or cramps. These are the temporary solutions for this problem and hence the patient will need to take care of eating proper and balanced food.
