Gastrointestinal health and its functioning are important for leading a long life. The food that remains undigested in our stomach gives birth to number bacteria which may be harmful. These bacteria live in our bowel, and hence have an implication on our health. The gastrointestinal tract consists of mouth, teeth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. In addition to these organs, the liver, kidneys, and pancreas, help digestion of the food we eat and gather nutrients from our daily intake of food and liquids. Hence, Gastrointestinal health has an important role in our well-being and in our physical fitness. Gastrointestinal health protects us from many diseases and malfunctions and guarantee a long life.
In order to lead a long healthy life you must do the following:
- Refrain from eating refined and processed foods and sugar. Avoid food that is packed in tins, cans or boxes, avoid ready to eat and heat and eat type of foods. All processed times contain a lot of chemicals in the form of preservatives and are detrimental to the gastrointestinal health. Likewise, all the refined products-refined flour, sugar lack nutrients and are not good for gastrointestinal health.
- Eat a balanced diet. Eat only when you are hungry. Do not overeat. Chew your food properly. Do not drink water or any liquid while having a meal. The digestive juice in the body gets diluted and hampers the digestion activity in the gastrointestinal health. Drink water only one hour after the meal. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking as far as possible. Overdose of alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine also weakens our digestive system.
- Avoid using painkillers and other drugs for nominal reasons. These are after all chemicals, which can harm our gastrointestinal health.
- Add a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Fibers are found in ample in cabbage, lettuce, spinach, beans, and citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime, and apples. Fiber improves bowel movement and improves gastrointestinal health. Add salads and uncooked food in your diet.
- Our gastrointestinal health is the mirror to how we live. The more balanced our life style, the healthier we will be.
As our body gets tired after continuously working, so does our gastrointestinal health. Give it a break occasionally for its effective and optimum functioning. Be on fast or on fruit diet at least once in a week. This helps in cleansing the body internally and provides oiling for the internal organs. It will give some brethren to your digestive system. Avoid eating very late at night. Avoid keeping up till late night. Age-old saying is true- early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
Adequate sleep is also necessary to maintain our gastrointestinal health. Drink enough water during the day. Exercise well, yogic exercises like kabalbhati pranayam(an exercise of breathing out without taking in much air) and anulom vilom pranayam ( an exercise where one breathes in through one nostril and breathes out through the other) have proved to improve the overall body functions.
