Gonorrhoea is an age-old disease and mankind is struggling to get control over it, with little success. In fact, the number of patients infected with Gonorrhoea is continuously on the rise. Gonorrhoea can never be transmitted to another person other than by coming into sexual contact with the infected person. Though it is widespread, it is not fatal.
Bacteria cause gonorrhoea and the medical name for the bacteria causing gonorrhea is bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
It is a sexually transmitted disease. In men, it affects the mucous membrane of the urethra whereas in females endocervix and urethra are infected. However, it may spread to other tissues as well. It can also affect eyes and the throat. One contacts the disease during intercourse. A newborn baby can contact the disease from the mother. Conjunctivitis is also caused by this bacterium. Conjunctivitis is common amongst infants. The disease is more common in male than in females.
Generally, it takes a period of ten to twenty days to spread the infection. The disease starts showing its impact after the 15th days of contacting the infection. Common symptoms in women are vaginal discharge, projectile urinating, burning sensation while urinating, and disturbance in the menstrual cycle and traces of blood after intercourse. Pus is formed. In men there is swelling in the genitals and bad smell comes in the urine. There is increase in the male hormones. Urethra is also infected and pus is formed.
Laboratory test of the cervictis and the urethritis confirms that the condition the person is experiencing is gonorrhoea. In most cases, both cervictis and urethritis are infected. One contacts gonorrhea via vaginal, oral or anal sex. The patient may also experience pain, cramps, fever, vomiting in case the patient has been infected with the pelvic inflammatory disease. There is pus release in men and pain while passing the urine. If proper medication is not done, prostate glands, urethral structure and epididymis can develop in men.
Women are generally infected with the pelvic inflammatory disease. In case the infection is grave in nature, it can lead to infertility. Gonorrhoea can be treated with antibiotics like Ampicillin, Cefixime, Azithromycin, Ceftriaxone, Cefpodoxime, Ciprofloxacin, and Ofloxacin. Penicillin cannot be administered in all the cases.
In case of pregnant woman contacting the disease, many of the above-mentioned drugs cannot be administered. Both the partners should be checked for infection so that the disease does not spread. The patient should also be checked for any other sexually transmitted disease. Partners must also be treated to avoid being infected again. Rectal infection occurs in homosexual men is due to anal intercourse. Ocular infections are more serious in nature with far reaching consequences and can affect the eyesight of the newborn. From the history of sexually transmitted diseases, one thing comes out loud and clear is that remaining faithful to your partner.
A simple prevention of this disease is the use of condoms and restricting of sexual activity with one partner or practicing monogamy or abstaining from sex completely. With little precaution this condition can be easily prevented.
