There are several women in this world who are suffering from ovarian cancer. The number of women getting this type of cancer is constantly increasing. Women have to take good care of them, as healthy food and exercise are sometimes not enough to remain protected from several health conditions. Ovaries are very important reproductive glands, as they produce egg and there is one ovary on each side of the uterus in the pelvis. This egg travels in the fallopian tube and when it comes in contact with sperms then it fertilizes into a baby.
Ovarian cancer begins in the ovary with single tumor but soon many tumors develop into the ovaries. Most of these tumors are non-cancerous and can be easily removed by removing the affected part of the ovary. In some cases the entire ovary is removed, as the entire part of ovary is affected by tumors. Before knowing about ovarian cancer in more detail, you must understand the three kinds of tissue that ovaries have.
- Stromal cells, which are important in development of hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
- Germs cells, which develop into eggs every month and then travel in the fallopian tube.
- Epithelial cells, which cover the ovary and provide protection.
As there are three tissues that the ovaries have, there are three ways to tell the kind of cancerous or non-cancerous tumors that you are suffering from. Regular checkups are a good way to know about your body.
- Stromal cell tumor begins from the connective tissue that holds both the ovaries together.
- Germ cell tumor begins from the part of the ovary where the egg develops.
- Epithelial tumor is the most dangerous as it covers most part of the ovary. The number of women suffering from this kind of tumors is more.
The Epithelial tumors never spread or turn into serious illness. The malignant tumors re cancerous and can spread to connective tissue and the stomach but the non-cancerous tumors never spread to other parts. The benign tumor can prove fatal and mostly the young aged girls are more prone to getting such kind of tumors. The Epithelial ovarian cancer is also known as carcinomas and about 85% to 90% of women have this kind of ovarian cancer. Following is the list of different types of cancers –
- Fallopian Tube Cancer is rare and it has the same symptoms as that of ovarian cancer. As the name suggests this tumor starts in the fallopian tube carrying the egg from the ovary to the uterus.
- Germ Cell Tumor can be dangerous in some cases but overall there are just non-cancerous tumors. Only five percent of such tumors can result in ovarian cancer.
- Stromal Tumors are commonly seen in women in her fifties. Out of this too only five to seven percent of the tumors can lead to ovarian cancer. There are five percent chances of young girls getting this kind of tumors. The common symptoms of this kind of tumor are vaginal bleeding, re-entry of period even after menopause, early menstruation in case of young girls and breast development.
