Pelvic Gynecological

The pelvic gynecological test is an important test that women must undergo on certain occasions. This test is used for diagnosing a host of ailments in the female body as well as a part of the regular female checkup. The following are the problems for the diagnosis of which the pelvic gynecological test might be done:-

  • To determine if there are any infections in the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections are the commonest conditions in this area.
  • To determine if there are any sexually transmitted diseases in the female. Possible suspects are trichomoniasis, herpes, gonorrhea, human papillomavirus and Chlamydia.
  • To determine the cause of any kind of pain in the pelvic or the abdominal region.
  • To determine the reason for any hemorrhage in the pelvic area.
  • To determine what method of contraception will work the best for the female.

In addition, a pelvic gynecological test might also be done in order to determine if any crime such as a sexual assault has been done on the woman. The results of such tests are held as conclusive evidences of sexual assault in courts of law.

Preparing for a Pelvic Gynecological Examination

There are certain things that need to be kept in mind before going for this exam. The following are the things that are expected of all women undergoing the test:-
The woman must not have her periods during the time of the test. This is because the presence of blood in the vaginal area may show some adverse effects on the true reports of the test.
The woman must not have had any sexual episode at least 24 hours before the test. Residues of seminal fluid present in the vagina can interfere with the true results of the exam.
The woman must not have used any kind of vaginal products, such as sprays or powders, or douches or tampons, etc. at least 24 hours before the test.

Women who are undergoing pregnancy or women who have any kind of problems with their urination must report these to the examiner before the examination begins. At the same time, women who are using some kind of contraception must make this clear to the examiner. Other things that need to be brought to the notice of the medical examiner is whether this is a first time pelvic test or whether the woman has undergone any kind of medical procedures that involves the pelvis.

The Pelvic Gynecological Test

The test has 4 parts.

  • The External Exam – The examiner will check for any external abnormalities in the vaginal and anal area. Any odor or discharge is taken into account.
  • The Internal Exam – A speculum is inserted in the vagina so that it is opened, which enables the examiner to see the cervix and the inside vaginal walls. The cervix is scraped clean with a brush and this sample is collected. A cotton swab sample is also collected.
  • Bimanual Exam – Here, two fingers are inserted into the vagina. At the same time, the abdomen is pressed down from the outside. Any discrepancies in the reproductive organs are noted.
  • Rectovaginal Exam – This may or may not be performed. Here, a finger is inserted in the anus and another in the vagina to check any discrepancies therein.
