Death is a reality that no one can escape from. But the trauma that the loved one's death can cause is beyond any explanation. If you have experienced this then only you can understand how much emotionally drench the death of your loved one makes you. In case of several deaths the trauma is even more. Many people need lots of time to come out of the posttraumatic stress. Posttraumatic stress disorder is a kind of emotional disease, which is caused by some kind of life-threatening or highly unsafe experience. People suffering from such condition try to avoid places, people or things that remind them of the frightful experience. Such people also become relatively sensitive towards the normal life experiences.
Posttraumatic stress disorder is not a new condition and it exists since the time human beings are there in this world. About 7 to 8 percent of people in America itself develop PTSD in their lifetime. Among them also the rape victims and warriors having PTSD is about 10% to 30%. The people who have less social support are more prone to getting posttraumatic stress disorders. Women have double chances of getting PTSD in comparison to men simply because they are originally too emotional. The patients who are getting treatment in outpatient mental-health services are also getting this disorder. Even if you are not present at the time of the traumatic incident happened, you might suffer from such disorders by hearing about it or by seeing it on television.
Even children and teenagers are not protected and may also develop posttraumatic stress disorder. More than 40% of the teenagers and kids have experienced this kind of disorder. Here to the number of girls suffering from such disorders are more than the boys. About 30% to 60% of the children who have witnessed any kind of trauma have PTSD. If a child has seen a parent killed or tolerated a sexual assault have high chances of developing PTSD. The common symptoms of PTSD are listed below –
- Horrible memories and flashbacks can cause recurring nightmares and thus make the affected person get up in between sleep. Many patients will find it difficult to fall asleep, as whenever they will close their eyes the horrible memories will haunt them.
- Developing a phobia to go to certain places or to meet certain people and avoiding all such things that bring back the horrible memories of the trauma.
- Children may find it difficult to focus on their studies and can become short tempered. Children getting startled for no reason at all or increased irritability and lack of concentration.
Along with these above-mentioned symptoms the affected person may become emotionally dead and try to avoid meeting everyone around him or her. The affected person will have no interest in planning for future instead think all the time about the painful past. The symptoms of posttraumatic stress should not last for more than one month of the tragedy but if the symptoms are not going after three months also then it is termed as chronic PTSD.
