Urinary Incontinence

Temporary Urinary Incontinence -
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. It is not a disease in itself, but it is the result of some disease. It can affect both men and women. It is more common in women than in men. Most of them feel shy to report this problem to the doctor. Children under the age of five, wet the bed at night. It is very common in children. Some of them continue bed wetting well past the age of five. There could be several reasons for the same. If the child feels insecure, or has been through some bad phase in life say rape, molestation or accident or tragedy, then the child can suffer from temporary urinary incontinence. If there is urinary incontinence even during the day, it may be the result of some abnormality.

Drugs/ Medicines: Certain medicines like sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, high blood pressure medicines, medicines prescribed for heart can lead to urinary incontinence. Upset stomach or indigestion can lead to constipation. Constipation increases load on the rectum and the bladder. This can lead to over work of the bladder and result in leakage. Consumption of liquids- If you consume lots and lots of liquids in short time, the bladder gets full and pressurize the bladder. This can lead to the urinary incontinence.

Excessive Consumption of Caffeine and alcohol: Drinking too much of tea, coffee or soft drinks make the kidney work more and produce more urine and can cause the leakage. Alcohol, like tea and coffee is diuretic and increases the activity of the kidneys, and produce more urine. This too can lead to urinary incontinence. Some people do not consume liquids in adequate quantities. The urine gets thicker. It will cause irritation in the bladder and lead to leakage. When less liquid are consumed, the bladder capacity also decreases. Infection of the urinary tract can also result in urinary incontinence.

Persistent Urinary Incontinence -

Pregnancy, Menopause – When the baby grows in the stomach, its weight puts pressure on the bladder. The muscles of the bladder become weak and lead to urinary incontinence. Post delivery, the muscles of the vagina, uterus are not toned as before and may loose control and lead to leakage.  Likewise, during menopause, the production of estrogen stops and the tissues in the vagina becomes weak. This can result in incontinence.

Urinary incontinence can also be the result of radiation, chemotherapy or because of the medicines given to cure prostrate cancer. When the uterus is removed, the tissues may become weak and result in urinary incontinence. An enlarged prostate in men causes the urethra to constrict and blocks the flow of urine. This is another reason for urinary incontinence. When there is swelling in the bladder walls, it can lead to leakage. This is generally found in women. If there are tumors in the urinary tract, then the path of the urine is hampered and can lead to urinary incontinence. The signals from the brain become weak in a person suffering from Parkinson and can lead to urinary incontinence.
