Around the age of 45 and 50, a woman passes through the stage of menopause. Before, during or after the menopause, most women experience vaginal dryness or vaginal atrophy. Vaginal dryness is a common problem experienced by most women during menopause. Inside the uterus are the mucous membranes, which keep the vagina wet. The estrogen help the mucous membrane produce moisture and lubricate the vaginal skin.
During menopause, the estrogen level in the body reduces drastically. As the result, vagina gets dried. The walls of the vagina also get thinned. The body releases lesser amount of mucous during menopause. This aggravates the vaginal dryness. The mouth of vagina also becomes smaller. As a result, the intercourse becomes very painful. It could also result in bleeding. Most women shy away from intercourse during this time. There is also itching and burning sensation. Though, vaginal dryness occurs primarily at the time of menopause, it can affect to any woman of any age group. Apart from menopause, vaginal dryness can occur due to various reasons like:
- Smoking
- While breast-feeding, the skin gets dehydrated resulting in vaginal dryness.
- If one is under going radiation or chemotherapy.
- If one is suffering from sexually transmitted diseases.
- Diabetes also dries vaginal skin.
- Use of very strong perfumes, deodorants or detergents.
- If the under clothes are not cleaned properly, it can cause skin irritation.
- If ovaries are removed recently.
- Use of anti depressant medicine.
- Rape or excessive sex.
- You have been using antibiotics for a long time.
- Tampons can cause dryness of vagina.
- If the woman is not fully aroused before the intercourse, then the vagina will not be lubricated and she will experience dryness in her vagina.
- Urinary Infection
Vaginal Dryness can be got rid off by following some simple steps.
- Drink ample water. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday. This will keep the body hydrated and reduce the dryness.
- Check if any of the personal hygiene products that you are using are causing skin irritation.
- Do not use strong perfumes, powder and bubble bath.
- Change your food habits. Switch on to a diet, which is low on fat and more on carbohydrates. Add soy and flax to your diet to make your diet wholesome.
- Apply some lubricant in your vagina. This will instantly reduce the dryness and give relief in irritation. Many lubricants are available in the market. The lubricant should be rich in Vitamin E. You can also try using oil or moisturizer.
- In case you are smoking, quit smoking immediately.
- In case you are suffering from any bacterial infection, consult your doctor immediately.
- Use of vaginal cream prescribed by your doctor.
- Don’t shy away from your doctor. Tell me your problem clearly so that he can prescribe the right medication for you.
- Certain exercises increase the flexibility of the muscle and help in reducing the dryness.
