Eyes

Being Pitta in nature, the eyes benefit from being kept cool. Wash them gently with water no hotter than body temperature. Water that has been held in the mouth will be the correct temperature and that little bit of saliva that is mixed in it will act as a natural bacterio-static.

For dry or itchy eyes and for general advantage to eyesight, place a drop of sesame oil in each eye. As this will initially mist over the vision, it is most convenient to do this directly before sleeping. The special Ayurvedic procedure of netra basti is also excellent to take for these conditions.

For tense or bloodshot eyes, use a couple of drops of unadulterated rose water to soothe the eyes as essential or once a week for avoidance. On a daily basis, rest with your eyes. You may cover them with slices of cool cucumber, or cotton balls soaked in aloe-vera, cilantro juice, and eyebright or fennel tea. Interestingly, oiling the soles of the feet with castor oil also pulls heat from the eyes. Honey, castor oil, barberry, or triphala tea applications may be used under the direction of an Ayurvedic practitioner to remedy simple eye complaints. In general, factors that damage the eyes include:

  • Studying in improper or inadequate light
  • Watching a lot of or being close up to a television
  • Staring at computer screens for long periods
  • Being in overly bright light
  • Looking at solar eclipses without proper precautions
  • Heating the head
  • Using hot water to wash the hair
  • Eating very spicy food and drink

To improve eyesight:

  • Reduce hours spent in artificial light
  • Use full spectrum lighting for both regular incandescent and fluorescent lights
  • Gaze at a flame of a butter lamp or candle for 20 minutes daily
  • Massage and oil your big toes
  • Do eye exercises

Television and computer screens are very demanding for the eyes. They also heat the eyes. Netra basti or the treatment of having ghee in the eyes for a period of time is very useful. One way you can do this treatment for yourself is to use an old pair of swimming goggles and pour warm ghee into each eye cup. Place the cups against the eyes securely and lean back on amazing that it will not matter if a little ghee drips onto it. Allow the eyes to roll around in this warm ghee for about 10 minutes. Lean forward to allow the ghee to drain back in the cups.
