There are eight steps in a full Ayurvedic facial treatment:
1. Cleansing
2. Oleation massage
3. Herbal steam or compress
4. Gentle scrub
5. Cleansing or nitrifying mask/facial pack.
6. Toning/rejuvenating
7. Moisturizing
8. Hydrating
9. Application of make-up (optional)
Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing are enough on a daily basis, Do the full program once a week or at least twice a month.
Each of the steps is methodically explained in the
text below, counting how to do each procedure and recipes for each skin
type.
The recipes offered in this section offer for basic
component with suggestions for adapting formulas for meticulous skin
types and personal preferences. Often people have strong attractions or
hatred to scents, so I have tried to offer a multiplicity of
“flavors”. All of the components are available through sources listed
in the Source Appendix. In keeping with the spirit of Ayurveda, the age
old herbal science, as the needs of individuals differ, I do not
indicate exact proportions. It is best to trust your intuition and test
out what proportions of ingredients create the effect you feel is
best. However, if you want to use the techniques but are not so
interested in making your own cosmetics, there are a number or
brilliant Ayurvedic cosmetics accessible from several companies that
are also listed in the Source Appendix. Please keep in mind that just
because ingredients are pure and natural does not make them
hypoallergenic. Whether you make cosmetics at home or purchase them from
a commercial company, test these cosmetics on a small area of skin
before you spread them all over your face or body. On a daily basis,
cleansing, moisturizing, and a little rejuvenative care is all that is
usually needed. The complete program is wonderful to do once a week.
You’ll find that the time you set aside for yourself will pay
dividends. You will look and feel more beautiful, have more strength
and stamina, greater clarity of mind and basically feel more confidence
in dealing with the demands of the day. For women, time taken for this
kind of self development, in particular on the first day of your
period, can make a wonderful difference in menstrual symptoms and will
case the transitioning through menopause.
