Dry Hair- Reduce factors in your
lifestyle that aggravate Vata dosha. Make sure you have plenty of zinc
and essential fatty acids in your diet. Give yourself regular warm oil
head massages. Use amla (amlaki), shikakai, brahmi oils or warm sesame
oil with essential oils of lavender, geranium, or juniper.
Oily Hair- Reduce factors in your
lifestyle that aggravate Pitta dosha, particularly oily foods. Wash
your hair frequently, use lemony rinses, brush your hair well and don’t
be scared to use oily massage. Massage helps balance the scalp
condition, particularly when herbal essential oils are used. Neem oil
works well or jojoba oil with essential oil of bergamot, clary sage,
juniper, cedar wood, cypress, lemon, and lavender.
Dandruff- This problem often
resolves with a natural foods diet and improved agni. Sometimes it is
aggravated by allergies or particular foods that stress the liver. These
foods include heavy, fatty foods like milk, yoghurt,
cheese, peanut butter, and fatty red meats. Massage helps to stimulate
the scalp and circulation. Essential oils of eucalyptus and rose in
jojoba oil (20 drops per two fluid ounces) also help this state.
Eucalyptus stimulates and cleanses the scalp while rose tones and
soothes. For itchy dandruff with flaking and inflammation, geranium,
lavender, juniper, and sandalwood essential oils in combination with
jojoba oil as a base is helpful. Massage well into the scalp, leave
over-night, and shampoo well in the morning Oily, scaling scalp is
helped by cedar, rosemary, and lemon essential oils. Diet wise, eating
parsley and using a parsley rinse also helps. Parsley is very rich in
nutrients for hair and is matching and soothing to use outwardly.
Hair Loss- As well as a poor diet, hair can be severely damaged by many other factors. Some of the other factors include:
- Stress and anxiety that tightens the scalp and decreases circulation
- Hormonal changes in pregnancy and menopause
- Thyroid inequity
- Medications, particularly diet pills
- Illness and/or allergies
- Shock or long-term worry
- Over-processing with perms and dyes
- Genetic tendencies
To cure this condition, massage with bhringaraj and
brahmi oils. Work deeply into the scalp to relax and nourish the
nervous system, helpful against all the factors listed and helps to
rejuvenate the hair roots so they can once again produce healthy hair.
In New Mexico a plant called Yerba de la Negrita is
used. Its act is to soften the sebum that is often dry, binding the
hair roots, once the roots are clear and healthy; the hair is free to
grow. This is New Mexico Ayurveda, the age old herbal science!
