Well-organized digestion and elimination are central to both health and beauty in Ayurveda, the age old herbal science. Good looks are not probable without optimal functioning of digestion and removal.
The mouth is the first organ of digestion, being the first place where food enters the body. Chewing will and methodically tasting food is necessary to efficient digestion. Good chewing goes a long way to recompensing for not eating foods that are best for you and it also make sure that when you eat quality food, you are getting the most from it. To chew well, strong teeth and healthy gums are needed. To taste foods correctly you need a strong, clean tongue and a good sense of smell.
To help keep the teeth strong, clean and floss them dawn and evening. Brush them with herbal or Ayurvedic tooth preparations. These crops usually taste good, are fresher for the breath, and will help reinforce both teeth and gums. Use a soft nylon or natural bristle brush. Brush teeth away from the gums or in tiny circles and make sure to reach all surfaces of the teeth. On a defensive note, limit or avoid soft drinks, sucking candy or chewing sweet things that stick to your teeth – even raisins. They not only erode the protective enamel of the teeth, but leech precious raw materials out of the body, weakening teeth and bones in general. After they are ingested, foods that are high in minerals strengthen the teeth. Sea vegetables, dark greens, and quality dairy foods help strengthen teeth from within.
Healthy teeth need healthy gums to hold them in position and supply nutrients. Flossing helps bleeding gums by removing trapped food particles and tartar build-up. Gum massage is also very helpful. Try to massage the gums daily, especially if they show signs of receding, here is a simple, but useful recipe for a gum massage mixture:
- 5 parts alum powder (helps to tighten gums)
- 2 parts rock salt (soothes)
- 3 parts black pepper (disinfects
- 1 part turmeric (tightens gums, , increases blood flow and disinfects)
Use this mixture as a powder or mix with a little sesame oil, clove oil, or ghee for easier application. Use the middle finger and massage the gums in small, anti-clockwise circles. For those of you who are not attracted to this procedure, you might try the advice of a British dentist and a student of Ayurveda, the age old herbal science: Massage the gums with a mashed strawberry. It does a great job of cleaning the teeth and its astringent qualities tone the gums.
The tongue is the mirror for the condition of the intestines. Coating on the tongue shows an attendance of ama or undigested toxic material in the digestive tract (as well as not being very attractive). This coating is a discharge, like urine or sweat and needs to be removed each morning lest it is swallowed back down into the system when eating and drinking. Rub the tongue using a silver, popper, or stainless steel spoon or an Ayurvedic tongue scraper, available through suppliers of Ayurvedic products. Be gentle, especially if the tongue is inflamed. A costing towards the back of the tongue suggests a problem in the large intestine; the middle has more to do with the stomach and small intestine. Improving digestion will cure a sticky, thickly coated tongue over time. This takes longest for Vata constitution as Vata digestion is so variable. Tongue analysis is as compound as pulse taking, but some simple explanations are given in Dr. Vasant Lad’s Ayurveda, the age old herbal science: the Science of Self- Healing.
Regarding bad breath, for a full cure seek to improve digestion. Try a half cup of aloe vera juice twice a day. Also, chew roasted fennel seeds after meals. Both of these techniques are symptomatic and help the digestive process.
