The nose is called the door to the brain, possibly because brain function is so strongly influenced by smell.
As you did with the ears, each morning, use your little finger to apply a little sesame oil or ghee around the inside of each nostril. This helps one to maintain a keen sense of smell and calms the mind by helping to keep vata dosha in balance. Massaging the tip of the nose stimulates the heart while massaging the flare of the nose stimulates the lungs.
Washing the sinus passages using clean, warm water with a pinch of salt and a pinch of turmeric is a common practice in India. It may be done daily or when the sinuses are congested with mucous, clogged from inhaling dust and dirt, or dry and swollen. Gently inhale the mixture up one nostril at a time. Allow the mix to drain into the back of your mouth and then spit it out. Repeat on the other side. Getting water up the nostrils is most professionally done using an Ayurvedic jal neti pot. However, a cup will do. For clearing the nasal passages and other medicinal purposes, nasya is also performed.
