Standing or kneeling behind your friend, crib the back of their head in your cupped hands. Close their ear holes with your thumbs and place your finger tips along the ridge of the head at the back of the head. Feel the weight of their head in your hands. The more relaxed the person is, the heavier their head will feel in your hands. Note that the more you relax your own arms; you will assist them in letting go more with no trouble.
Ask your friend to “let go” and allow you to do the moving as you bring their chin forward to their chest, stretching the curve of their neck, holding their head in this position to the count of three. If there is pain or stiffness rock the head quietly between your two hands. Then allow the head to rest on the table for a little moment. Do again this process two more times; raising, then gently lowering the head. (Sometimes during the treatment, the neck tightens again. You will notice this by the chin pointing more in the air than being in a slightly tucked position. If you see this, re-adjust the head, using this gentle stretch method.)
Step one set up a non-invasive contact with the person, building rapport and mutual confidence.
BENEFIT: Releasing neck tension which initiates a “relaxation” response in the whole body by opening up the flow of energy from the spine into the whole head.
