Coughing is the reflex action of the body to clear up the respiratory tract from any kind of debris or mucous that obstructs the respiratory passage. Cough is a common phenomenon that occurs to every body, even to a new born baby. It can be either acute or chronic depending upon the duration it is prevailing.

Cough is of two types

• Productive cough - it is the type of cough that is accompanied by mucous that gets produced in lungs and respiratory tract.
• Non productive cough – it is a kind of cough which is dry i.e. does not accompany with the mucous.

Causes

Below are the various causes of cough

• Inflammation of upper respiratory tract including pharynx and larynx.
• Smoking, especially cigarettes that don not have filters are high cause of coughing.
• Allergies to certain allergens like pollens, smoke, dust and other such substance may also aggravate cough.
• Diseases like asthma and bronchitis is also a major cause of coughing.
• Change in environmental conditions may also trigger coughing.

Home Remedies

• A slice of lemon sucked with black pepper and common salt helps in relieving the cough.
• Dadim (grapes) are very effective measures to reduce productive cough and cold as it is an excellent lung toner.
• Consuming garlic at night in winters after meals helps in reducing cough.
• Licorice mixed with pinch of black pepper and pure honey when take twice a day helps in reducing cough.
• Honey mixed with grape juice is a great remedy for cough.
• Dry cough can be dealt by gargling warm spinach juice.
• Cuscus grass (3-5 grams) when crushed in coconut milk relieves from dry cough when consumed with one table spoon of honey before going to bed.
• Grinded resins mixed with equal quantity of sugar are mixed with water and heated till the mixture acquires a semi solid texture (jammy texture). Now four table spoon of this jam is consumed at bed time with hot milk.
• Herbal tea made from tulsi (holy basil), saunf (aniseed) and (mulethi) licorice is very effective in relieving cough immediately.
• Making paste of white of almonds soaked overnight in water and then consumed it twice daily with freshly made butter and sugar is good for relieving cough.
• Consume five leaves of tulsi (holy basil) with five black pepper helps in relieving with cough and other upper respiratory tract infections (URTI).

Note- do not chew holy basil leaves.

• Honey mixed with onion juice when consumed thrice a day is an excellent throat solution.
• Crushed onion is added to lime juice and a cup of boiling water. Then the honey is added to the solution to make an excellent herbal solution to treat any kind of cough and throat disorders.
• Cough can be avoided by drinking hot water two hours prior to passing stools in morning and one hour after having meal.
• Drinking of hot carrot juice is a good remedy from relieving from cough.
• Drinking of hot water by adding few drops of juniper juice is a good solution to throat problems.
• Consumption roasted haldi (turmeric) grinded to powder and then consumed three grams twice daily is an excellent remedy to relive cough.
