At home you can use fluoride rinses and gels to clean your teeth. With the help of fluoride containing toothpaste you will need to brush your teeth twice and floss once in a day. Before sleeping you must brush your teeth, so that the fluoride remains in your teeth.
What is the actual procedure for fluoride treatment?
In fluoride treatments higher concentrations of fluoride is used for both children and adults. The dentist can choose from acidulated phosphate fluoride of neutral sodium fluoride depending upon the person undergoing the treatment. Out of these two the neutral sodium fluoride is not acidic and it is used for those who have dry mouth or have bridges, crowns or fillings. First the dentist will make the teeth dry and then apply fluoride either in gel form or foam form or as a varnish. After this treatment the patient is not allowed to eat or drink anything for thirty minutes.
Dentist can also paint the fluoride on the teeth or apply with the help of a mouth guard looking like tray. The patient is asked not to swallow the fluoride applied on the teeth. In case of children the fluoride supplements are given, which the child will need to take per day. The quantity of the supplement will be based on the age of the child and the amount of fluoride that the child drinks on a daily basis. But the overdose of fluoride supplement is not good and hence the rules set by dentist has to be strictly followed.
Are there any risks involved in fluoride treatment?
If the fluoride is used in prescribed format then there is no danger from it, as fluoride is very safe but as mentioned earlier an overdose can be dangerous. Hence parents should check how much toothpaste their children are taking and whether they are spitting it out properly or not. The fluoride supplements also should be given in the doses mentioned by the dentist. These supplements should be kept away from the reach of children.
If by mistake your child takes overdose of fluoride or swallow the fluoride, then he or she will feel nauseous. Also this can cause spots on the enamel of any developing teeth. These spots look very bad and are highly visible. Hence it is must to meet the dentist and take their advice without wasting any time.
