Depression can have its toll on anybody. A seemingly healthy person may be suffering from depression. Depression, basically takes one towards low self esteem, self pity, mood swings, lack of interest in the routine activities, lack of ability to enjoy or towards pleasures of life.

Providing Support to Persons suffering from depression
The incidence of Depression is so rampant, that may be we come across them in our every day life. It is our duty to provide such persons with mental support. It is proved that along with medical help and professional counseling, people suffering from depression are in need of continuous support from the people close to them. They are in need of security. We can provide them this help by our loving and caring words, by being gentle with them.
We need to deal with them with great patience. Depressed people have tendency to think negatively about all the issues concerning them. We should show them that we understand what they are passing through. Never ill treat them or use harsh words for them. Try to provide moral support to these people. Try to convince them about their positive traits.
One of the biggest challenges in dealing with a person suffering from depression is to take him or her to a psychiatrist. People don’t readily agree to visit a psychiatrist. We should convince them that depression is a type of illness similar to any other disease. It does not mean that the person is mentally challenged.
After the initial visit to the psychiatrist, several sessions of counseling may be required. Medication and counseling sessions help the patient come out depression. We should see to it that the patient completes the medication course and attends the counseling sessions as advised by the counselor.
Try to keep the patient busy by keeping him or her engaged in some activity. It could be anything that keeps the person occupied. For example, gardening, cleaning, going to a religious place, join some social activity club or a sports club, where the person can meet many people and interact with them.
There are depression support groups where a person can enroll and meet other people. There are groups that provide online support to persons suffering from depression. These depression support groups have chat rooms and discussion boards where a person suffering from depression can discuss his or her problem. These depression support groups also provide a platform to meet other people who once suffered from depression and have successfully overcome it. There are various help centers that provide assistance to people with depression.
