The treatment could last for a few months. Even when the patient is off the medicines, the counseling sessions may continue for some period, till the patient becomes confident and the behavior returns to normalcy.
Apart from medicines and counseling from professional, what the patient requires is support from family and friends. They are in constant need of reassurance, security and love. They have to be told time and again that they are needed. They have a role to play in the society. Meditation and yogic exercises can go a long way to cure depression.
