Depression is a mental disorder. It leads to the feeling of helplessness, sadness, loss of confidence, lowered self-esteem, lack of interest towards routine activities and mood swings. Depression is genetic in nature and could pass from one generation to another. It occurs as a result of chemical imbalance in the brain. When a person in the family gets depressed, the entire family is affected. The affected person does not attend to the routine chores. In fact, the person seriously feels that he will not be able to do any tasks at all. Severe depression can lead to suicide. Person suffering from depression have suicidal tendency and hence should not be left alone.
More number of females feels depressed as compared to men. However, the incidence of suicide is more prevalent in men. Patients suffering from depression are given antidepressants along with psychotherapy sessions. The number of counseling sessions required would depend upon the patients and the willingness of the patient to get well. A person suffering from depression feels low and feels unwanted and neglected. The patient is unable to enjoy any pleasures. Even a trivial problem seems very large to them. They may preoccupy themselves with the feeling of guilt, regret, helplessness, self-pity and insecure. The mind remains preoccupied in the negative thoughts. They are in constant need of support and solace. They are unable to focus on anything. The sexual desire also goes down the hill. The person becomes introvert and lethargic. The person experiences lack of sleep. There may be loss of appetite. The patient could complain of headaches, body aches, acidity etc.
Depression in children can lead to irritable and attention seeking behavior. They are unable to concentrate on their studies. There is lack of concentration and lack of interest. They become restless, demanding and feel insecure. It is difficult to diagnose depression in children as parents may treat it to be moody behavior. The incidence of depression is more in the West as compared to the Asian countries. Stress, economic pressures, pressure to maintain a particular lifestyle, long and strenuous working hours and lack of sleep can all lead to depression. In West, the family system is not prevalent. They don’t have family and friends to fall back in case of need.
However, with joint family fast becoming a trend of yester years, and the trend of being single, live in relationships on the rise, the incidence of depression is increasing in India as well. The treatment could last for a few months. Even when the patient is off the medicines, the counseling sessions may continue for some period, till the patient becomes confident and the behavior returns to normalcy.
Apart from medicines and counseling from professional, what the patient requires is support from family and friends. They are in constant need of reassurance, security and love. They have to be told time and again that they are needed. They have a role to play in the society. Meditation and yogic exercises can go a long way to cure depression.
