Hormone headaches are related to the sex hormones of a woman and her reproductive cycle. Hormones initiate the pain response. It is not possible to experience the pain without the hormones. The incidence of migraine in females is almost three times higher as compared to males. But the incidence of headaches in boys and girls before the age of puberty is equal. This signifies that the change in hormonal level in girls after puberty increases the incidence of headache manifold. High levels of female hormones are produced after attaining puberty.
60 percent of women with migraine report that their headaches happen more often right before, during, and after menstruation, when hormone levels change. This type of headache is known as menstrual migraine. These headaches may continue till the first trimester of pregnancy. It gets cured during second and third trimester of pregnancy. The headaches may cease after menopause or it may even get worse.
The quantity of serotonin in the body depends upon two female hormones, namely, estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen produces prostaglandins. Cramps during menstrual period are caused by prostaglandins.
Symptoms of a Hormone Headache -
The symptoms of a hormone headache are like that of migraine headaches. There is throbbing pain on one side of the head. It may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The women affected may become more sensitive to bright lights and very high decibel noise.
How to prevent hormonal headaches?
- Exercise regularly. Yoga and breathing exercises maintain the hormonal balance and are effective in curing hormonal headaches. This will help in toning of muscles and strengthen them. It will also relieve stress.
- Eat healthy food. Avoid ready to eat and heat and eat type of foods. These are processed food and contain lot of preservatives.
- Drink ample water. Consume at least four glasses of water in the morning, empty stomach. This will clear the body of all the toxins. There will be improvement in bowel movements and the bladder. Constipation also leads to headache. Drinking water will eliminate changes of constipation and automatically provide relief in headache.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar. These may change the hormonal balance and cause headaches.
- Keep a gap of at least four hours between 2 meals. Avoid stuffing your self too much. Instead, have 4 to 5 mini meals in a day.
- Add fruits and vegetables to your diet. It will help in cleansing the body from with in and will help in hormonal headache. Banana is known to cure hormonal headaches.
- Avoid eating meat. Non vegetarian food can alter the hormonal balance. Hence, it is better to avoid it.
- Sleep for a minimum of 7 hours daily. Disturbed sleep can aggravate a headache.
Very serious and persistent hormonal headache can lead to hormonal migraine id left untreated. It is better to consult a doctor in case of persistent headaches. The doctor may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines to relive the headache. Hormonal headaches can make the person feel irritated. It is quite painful and can hamper the routine activities.
