Migraine attack is the generally considered to be the most severe headache.  When a chemical reaches the brain, there is increase in the activity of the blood vessels. The blood vessels dilate and the expansion and contraction of blood vessels increase. This leads to an increase in activity in other parts of the body and leads to vomiting, blurred vision, nausea etc along with unbearable headache.

All severe headaches may not be migraine attacks. A severe headache could be the signal towards an upcoming attack. These attacks could last for as long as three days. During this period, the routine activities of the patient are disrupted. Doctors prescribe Migraleve, which is effective in subsiding severe headache as well as nausea.
Severe headaches can occur due to sinus thrombosis, high blood pressure, arterial dissections etc. The pulse and blood pressure should be monitored closely. Doctors may advise an ECG and CT scan in case severe headache is combined with vet high blood pressure.

Treatment for Severe Headache -

• Along with medication, lie down in a quite, dark room for some time.
• Apply cold compresses of water on both the sides of the forehead.
• Dissolve half a teaspoon of dried ginger powder in water and heat it. Apply the paste while it is Luke warm. It will give a burning sensation in the head, but will provide instant relief.
• If the blood pressure is high, drink freshly made gourd juice. It will reduce the blood pressure and provide relief in the headache.
• For blood pressure, acupressure also does wonders- Put your little finger in both the ears. Count up to 10 and release your fingers. Repeat it twice. The blood pressure will come down up to 10 counts immediately.

All severe headaches are not serious. However, some could be very serious and cannot be ignored.

Serious Causes of Headaches -

• Temporal Arteritis - The arteries in the head swell, especially the temporal artery which is located above the ear.  The pain is severe and the blood vessels appear soft to touch.
• Meningitis - The membranes around the brain swell. It is a serious disease and an emergency situation. If timely treatment is not given to the patient, it could be fatal or leave permanent disability in the patient.
• Stroke - An upcoming stroke can cause headache. But if there are no other symptoms along with the headache, then the headache is not due to stroke.
• Blood Pressure - When the blood pressure increases considerably over it s normal range of 120/80, it may cause a head ache.
• Hemorrhage - The bleeding occurs in the gap between the brain and the arachnoid layer of the meninges. Often, very high blood pressure can create increased pressure on the blood vessels and the blood vessels rupture, and cause bleeding. This is again an emergency and the patient should be rushed to the hospital immediately.
• Brain Tumor - Headaches will be accompanied by other symptoms in case of brain tumors.

If any other symptoms persist along with severe headache, rush to a nearby hospital for a check up.
