How to Identify Signs and Symptoms of Nervous Breakdown

Nervous breakdown is a term used to denote variety of clinical symptoms. It is a wide term that encompasses variety of mental illness relating to schizophrenia, panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, or acute stress disorder. According to a survey, nearly one third of total American population feels the symptoms of nervous breakdown at one point or other in their lives.

Signs and Symptoms of Nervous Breakdown may vary from person to person. Here are some of the common indications of a nervous breakdown:

  1. Paranoia: This indicates feeling of insecurity as if someone is watching and following the patient. This can be overtly stressful and bothersome to the patient leading to mental harassment. The patient may feel like it is only their imagination but find it hard to get rid of it.
  1. Panic attacks: Panic attacks and nervous breakdown are interrelated. Panic attacks may lead to feeling of fear, pounding pain in the chest, difficulty with breathing, hypertension, and a feeling of self detachment.
  1. Alienation: People who suffer from nervous breakdown may try to separate themselves from their loved ones like friends and family. They have a desire to be left alone. They try to use isolation to recover from a stressful state which is not helpful.
  1. Flashbacks of upsetting events: Where traumatic events indicate post-traumatic stress disorder, their flashbacks can trigger variety of symptoms of nervous breakdown. It can take the person back to the level of stress and uneasiness encountered during that period making him suffer mentally again and again.

Nervous breakdown can be extremely overwhelming. It might be related to disturbance in variety of factors namely financial, health, personal, and professional. The prolonged symptoms can lead to build up of stress, exhaustion, and helplessness. This may kick in the feeling of being unable to deal with the regular life.
