Pregnancy Week 13
In pregnancy week 13, your baby is about 2.5 to 3 inches long and 0.7 ounces in weight. As your uterus is also growing in size, your baby will get plenty of space to grow further and hence your baby will keep on growing as you will progress from one week to another. Your baby's head will appear large in proportion with rest of its body. The eyes are well formed and the intestine is also working fine. The pancreas of your baby will start producing insulin in this week. This insulin will regulate the blood sugar for your body for his or her entire life.
As your baby is growing in size, you will feel little discomfort and aching in the abdomen in the pregnancy week 13. There is no need to get scared though, as this is a natural feeling. This aching in the abdomen will happen as the ligaments surrounding the uterus are getting stretched so as to make more space for the growing baby. Such kinds of pains are called as round ligament pains and they are quite normal in the second trimester. You will get sharp pain in the abdomen along with faint ache in the lower abdomen. This kind of pain will affect you more when you will try to get up or try to change position in bed.
But along with abdomen pain, if you experience bleeding, vomiting or cramping then you should consult your doctor without wasting time. As mentioned earlier the round ligament pain only occurs when you get up or change position in bed, any pain that lasts for more than few minutes should not be ignored. Apart from this to prevent round ligament pain from occurring, you can take care while getting up and while changing your position in bed. You should practice slow motions while getting up and changing your positions in bed. If you will practice this now itself, you will not find it hard in later stage when you will gain more weight.
As you know pregnancy week 13 is the beginning week of second trimester, it means you have successfully passed through the first trimester. The second trimester is not as risky as the first one and hence you will actually enjoy your pregnancy the most in the second trimester. All the early signs of pregnancy will vanish and you will gain weight and your baby will also grow in size and weight. The rate of miscarriage is almost nil in the second trimester. There are still some cases in which the pregnant women may have miscarriage till week 20. There are certain pregnancy complications that might get detected in the second trimester like incompetent cervix.
In short the incompetent cervix means the cervix is too weak and there are high chances of premature birth with high chances of stillbirth. This is the main complication in the second trimester and almost 25% of the women have lost their pregnancy due to incompetent cervix. There is no way in which one can find out about the cervix in advance.
