 In pregnancy week 39, your baby will be about 7 to 7.5 pounds in weight and it will have same length 21 inches, which the baby had in the earlier week. Now is the correct time when you will start getting early signs of labor. Your doctor will check your baby's hear rate, so as to know all is well with the baby. When you will start getting contractions of your uterus, the oxygenated blood flow will get restricted form entering the placenta and in some cases this might distress the fetus. But it is a very normal procedure and it will not affect most babies. Your doctor will monitor all the changes inside your tummy with the help of the fetal monitor. During the labor, doctor will tie on belt on your abdomen, which works in similar fashion as that of the ultrasound and detects the hear rate of the baby.
When there will be about 1 cm dilation in you and when your membranes will get ruptured, then doctor will start doing the internal fetal monitoring too. In the internal fetal monitoring an electrode will be placed near your baby's scalp inside your body. This electrode will also give the heart rate of your baby during the labor. In pregnancy week 39, you might be finding it very hard to wait any further. You will start thinking about how your baby will look. There will be no more changes in your belly and hence you might get bored. You will start thinking like who the baby will look. But don’t make any plans as of yet, as your newborn baby will look a bit strange and will not resemble much like anyone.
In pregnancy week 39, your main thoughts will be about your baby and its features and characteristics. Babies have big heads and short or no neck. But slowly as the baby will grow all his or her features will start taking proper shapes. Your newborn babies head is very soft and has soft spots called as fontanels. This is what make the babies head to compress and fit in the birth canal during delivery. But with time these soft spots will vanish and your babies head will become strong like yours. There are high chances that the genitals and the breasts of your baby appear swollen after birth. This happens mainly due to the large dose of female hormones get transferred from you to your baby. But within few days of the birth all these symptoms will vanish.
In pregnancy week 39, you know that any moment you will need to rush to hospital, hence as far as possible keep someone to accompany you so that in case of emergency they can rush you to hospital. Make this person aware about your hospital bag and where you have kept it and all. When your baby will come in this world, you will find it great delight to touch your baby's skin, as it will be softest thing you have ever touched in your life. Make sure to see your baby carefully, as you will find some birthmarks on your baby's skin. But it is not necessary that all the babies will have birth marks.
